Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation, an annotated bibliography, presents the development of a specific aspect of thought in the past thirty years in music theory which has had linguistics as its basis. Each Chapter highlights a particular aspect of that historical stance and is organized in three sections: an introductory essay which surveys recent studies concerned with the specific topic, detailed annotations of the articles and books cited in the essay, and a chronological bibliography. The essay in each chapter briefly highlights the themes which are then discussed more fully in the annotations. The annotations are not only numbered consecutively throughout the dissertation but are also arranged chronologically within the chapters so that the reader may follow the development of thought in each topic historically. The bibliography at the end of each chapter amplifies the number of annotated references; earlier, representative studies, are also cited in the chapter bibliographies to give an indication of similarly oriented works which preceded the more recent application of linguistic theory to the analysis of music. The End Bibliography is an alphabetized listing of all references cited in the dissertation.
