Abstract/Summary:
Electoral geography in Thailand is a topic that has received only limited attention, in general, but even less in terms of its spatial implications. This dissertation, however, basically attempts to identify the geography of voting in Greater Bangkok. This study accomplishes to channel both electoral geography and urban politics of Greater Bangkok. The research reported here presents the results of the analysis of the spatial pattern of voting in Greater Bangkok during the elections from 1957 through 1976. What this analysis shows is that Prachatipat (Democrat Party) majorities have emerged in each election in terms of geographical representation in Greater Bangkok.;This study describes: (1) the qualifications--characteristics of residents and the social milieu in Greater Bangkok, with the results suggesting different constituency types, many of which were clearly identifiable as particular areas, such as the core area, suburban area, and fringe area; (2) the variations through the "friends, neighbors, and party influence on the electorate;" (3) the spatial extent of the constituency--locations from the standpoint of community-characteristic differences of these areal distributions, such as, the Thai Buddhist Community, the Thai Muslim Community, the Chinese Community, the Military Community, and the Non-Voting Community; (4) the Standardization of a Model Election System in Thailand; and (5) the Linkage Model of Electoral Impact on Overall Party Voting: House of Prachatipat, 1957-1976.;The primary aim of this study then is to identify and analyze the factors which contributed to continuing Prachatipat election successes. While the secondary goal is to describe the urban political operations influence on the electors in Greater Bangkok. Finally, this dissertation is to identify the notion of geographical influences that is commonly taken to mean effects due to the socio-economic and political culture of Greater Bangkok. All together, it concentrates on geographical influences on voting patterns. Several factors are determined in the following analysis.
