Abstract/Summary:
High velocity human factor (HVHF) environments are characterized by the possibilities of physical danger, high stakes, and unpredictable futures. Response to these incidents is one of the defining responsibilities for modern law enforcement officers. A generic qualitative research inquiry was performed to explore the psychological preparation techniques that current law enforcement officers utilize to prepare for HVHF environments. Strategies included purposeful sampling, and data was collected through participants interviewed using in-depth semi-structured qualitative inquiry design. Using an inductive thematic analysis, results were obtained on how law enforcement officers explained their experiences in using psychological preparation techniques to prepare for HVHF environments. Recommendations for future research include a larger sample size, a longitudinal approach, and variety within the population, such as research between new and experienced law enforcement officers.
