Abstract/Summary:
The primary objective of this study was to examine the adoption process and extent of usage of videoconferencing in Education and Business. The secondary objective was to compare videoconferencing users' responses in business with those using videoconferencing in education. The Video Teleconferencing Questionnaire was the survey instrument for the current study.;A secondary purpose of the study was to provide information for use in adopting and using videoconferencing in other businesses and educational institutions. The sample (193) was drawn from the total membership of the National University Teleconferencing Network (NUTN) and the International Teleconferencing Association (ITCA). The results are of particular interest to organizations planning to adopt and use videoconferencing.;The findings were divided into three areas: Small and Large organizations, Single and Multiple Site organizations, and Education and Business.;Small and large organizations. Large organizations consistently have higher usage of videoconferencing, more videoconferencing locations (on the average), higher budgets (capital and operating), more current and initial usage of videoconferencing, and tend to favor distance learning, and management and administrative applications, while Small organizations favor distance learning and training applications.;Single and multiple site organizations. Multiple Site organizations have higher usage of videoconferencing, more videoconferencing locations (on the average), higher budgets (capital and operating), more current and initial usage of videoconferencing, and tend to favor distance learning, and management and production applications, while single site organizations favor distance learning and training applications.;Education and business. Businesses have a pattern similar to the large and multiple site organizations, while educational institutions have a pattern similar to small and single site organizations. Educational institutions have primarily adopted ad hoc or satellite based videoconferencing, using one-way video for distance learning and training applications.
