Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this investigation was to compare the reliability and validity of a sport specific adaptation of the Test of Attentional and Interpersonal Style (TAIS) for football, (Football Concentration Survey) (FCS), with the original TAIS. In addition to being football specific, the FCS is position specific for the offensive positions of quarterback, runningback, and wide receiver. It was hypothesized that the FCS forms would demonstrate greater reliability and validity when compared to the TAIS. Construct validity was assessed by examining the correlations of a measure of competitive trait anxiety (Sport Competition Anxiety Test) (SCAT) with subscales of the FCS forms and the TAIS. Another aspect of the study involved the validation of the Coaches' Rating Scale for Football (CRSF) to assess football performance and serve as a dependent measure in the study. The CRSF was also designed as a position specific instrument for quarterbacks, runningbacks, and wide receivers. It was hypothesized that the CRSF forms would be significantly and positively correlated with seasonal statistics.;Pearson Product Moment correlations, as well as Cronbach alpha coefficients were obtained to evaluate test-retest reliability and internal consistency for the FCS scales. Factor analytic procedures were utilized with all forms of the FCS to assess the factor loadings of each of the FCS subscales. Correlational data were obtained for the subscales of the FCS and TAIS with football performance variables (seasonal statistics and CRSF). In addition, multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to assess the predictive strength of the FCS and TAIS subscales for football performance (seasonal statistics and CRSF).;Sport specific, as well as, position specific versions of the TAIS for runningbacks and wide receivers were found to hold promise as predictors of football performance. Effective attentional factors for the FCS-RB, FCS-WR and TAIS for runningbacks were shown to have predictive validity. Preliminary validation data suggested that the CRSF possesses utility as a measure of football performance.
