Abstract/Summary:
The chemistry of triphenylphosphino cyclopentadienyl carboxyiron carbonyl (a metallocarboxylic acid of iron) and its ester derivatives were studied through their physical and spectral properties, their reactions with acids, bases, and alcohols, their solubility behaviors in solvent systems of varying dielectric constants, and their decarboxylation processes. The mechanism which governs the decarboxylation process of triphenylphosphino cyclopentadienyl carboxyiron carbonyl was studied by comparing the thermal decomposition reactions of both the metallocarboxylic acid and its potassium salt. Based on these studies a general picture of the chemical properties of metallocarboxylic acids of transition metals was drawn.; The reducing capability of the metallocarboxylic acid of transition metal either as an isolated species in a stoichiometric system or as a reactive intermediate in a catalytic system was studied in the reduction of nitro compounds.; A revised mechanism for the Fischer-Tropsch reaction has been recently devised in these laboratories. It is believed that a study of the chemistry of the homogeneous analogues of the proposed reactive intermediates of this revised mechanism should shed some light on the homogeneous Fischer-Tropsch reaction.; To investigate these possibilities a series of binuclear bridging complexes of iron were synthesized and their chemistry studied through their photolytic, thermal, and oxidative reactions.; These studies gave indications that the binuclear bridging complexes can serve as sources of hydrocarbons. These studies also indicated that the bimetallocyclic complexes, though not isolated, might be involved in the reaction sequence which led to the hydrocarbon formation.
