Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between teacher engagement and student success. Data from the 2011 fourth-grade National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in Reading was analyzed in order to determine if the data reflect such a relationship.;We are at a critical time in education. The President's Race To The Top (RTTT) initiative affects us all. Sweeping changes are being made in teacher accountability and evaluation. Another concern is the integration of Common Core Standards. This initiative challenges each district to find the best way to implement these standards within their unique culture. In addition, we are in a global economic crisis. At the state level in New York this has resulted in a 2% tax cap.;Work engagement is a complex construct. The Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model of work engagement (Bakker & Demerouti, 2008) serves to explain what factors contribute to work engagement and what performance indicators will be seen as a result. Engagement is seen as a positive work-related state of mind that is persistent and pervasive. In this model, engagement is described as being characterized by vigor, dedication, and absorption. A linkage is assumed between work engagement and performance.
