Brownfield regeneration is a forefront topic in landscape architecture,and a realistic issue that needs to be solved urgently in the process of transformation and sustainable development of contemporary Chinese resource-exhausted cities.It is forward-looking and important.There are a large number of brownfield in resource-exhausted cities,China,occupying high-quality urban space and gathering as clusters.Its regeneration brings challenges and opportunities to the effective use of land,the improvement of ecological and social spaces,and the coordinated development of the city.Therefore,the regional perspective beyond “site by site” is needed.This study takes the typical brownfield in resource-exhausted cities as the research object,focuses on the spatial patterns and regeneration strategies of brownfield cluster from the regional perspective.The novel research results include the following items:(1)The term "brownfield cluster" has been improved,providing a new perspective on the spatial relationship between brownfield and brownfield,and between brownfield and cities.Starting from the characteristics and the driven forces for its formation,this study puts forward the definition of "brownfield cluster" for the first time,which is of positive significance for understanding the spatial relationship between brownfield and brownfield,as well as between brownfield and cities.It finds that the causes of "brownfield cluster" include changes in the macroeconomic structure,the inherent industrial logic of location,and the guidance of national policies.Moreover,the peculiar properties of brownfield cluster are clustering and relevance,and the leading factors for the formation of brownfield cluster include industrial material flow,resource elements,transportation factors and policy factors.The connectivity of industrial material flow and spatial aggregation provide dimensions for understanding the correlation between brownfield and brownfield in the brownfield cluster,and the scope of influence based on the supporting facilities and pollution scope expand the connotation of brownfield cluster.(2)A comprehensive identification method for industrial and mining brownfields is proposed,which is used to identify large-scale,large number,and multiple types of industrial and mining brownfield,laying the foundation for quantitative research on brownfield identification at the urban scale.Through the induction of remote sensing image features and the construction of case bases,the establishment of visual interpretation rules and land parcel correction principles,manual identification,recorrection of key research areas and verification of accuracy,2468 brownfield in 6 cities,including Huangshi City,Wuhai City,Pingxiang City,Xinyu City,Tongling City and Fushun City,are identified.On this basis,this study proposes a qualitative analysis method for the "city-brown" spatial pattern of brownfield and a quantitative analysis model of "individual-environment" spatial characteristics,which provides ways for quantitative research on brownfield at the urban scale.Furthermore,this research summarizes three types of "city-brown" spatial patterns and eight types of brownfield cluster spatial patterns by nearly 4000 brownfield in 12 sample cities.(3)A systematic brownfield regeneration strategy of resource-exhausted cities based on brownfield cluster is proposed,which provides a theoretical method and practical path for improving the ecological environment and optimizing the spatial structure of the resource-declining cities in China.This research explores the spatial transformation and relationship of "city-brown-green",and considers it as overall aims that brownfield cluster regeneration should meet the sustainable development and high-quality space construction needs of China's resource-exhausted cities.Based on the analysis of the three special challenges and opportunities that brownfield clusters bring to resource-declining cities,and comprehensively considering the four common problems of brownfield regeneration in China,the research puts forward supportive and spatial strategies for brownfield regeneration,and 8 corresponding practice paths.At last,taking Huangshi City,Hubei Province as an example,it validates the feasibility of brownfield cluster recognition,identification,spatial analysis,and regeneration methods and paths.It could be used as a reference for other Chinese resource-exhausted cities,which provides significant insights for the research and practice of brownfield regeneration.The research results are expected to provide important scientific basis for the sustainable development and ecological civilization construction of resource-exhausted cities in China,expands new perspectives of brownfield research,and deepen the research on brownfield at a mesoscale in landscape architecture.
