Yan Geling,an American Chinese female author, gains fame since 1970s for her contemporary creative writing in Chinese. In her twenty to thirty years' career as an author, she has produced more than sixty novels and short stories, film scripts and biographies, etc. She also explored doing bilingual creative writing,i.e.by using English Language. Her works have attracted wide attention from Chinese Literature researchers both at home and abroad.Using her literary works as research subject, this thesis attempts to do an observation and critical analysis on the entire process of Yan's creative writing, ranging from how her creative works develops overtime, shifts in feminine consciousness,as well as exploration of texts. The paper contains four parts. The first part is a general description of Yan Geling's novels and argues that Yan's writing follows a four-phase development path since her first work in 1978.This part analyses narrative themes, writing clues, processes of writing and reasons for shifts in her writing styles. This part will also explore how Yan's life influences her works. The second and the third are the most important parts of this paper, focussing on"shifts in feminine consciousness" and“narrative art characteristics",analysing her novel works since 1978,from which we can witness Yan's feminine conscious literary writing going through a route of "Stress-Search-Awakening-Reflection".This route matches Yan Geling's writing clue. The fourth part focuses on Yan's film literature and drama works,as well as her writing style. It analyses whether her job as a Hollywood film auditor and western narrative theories influenced her writing. There have been many research on Yan Geling's novels, but most of them focus on her specific work or a specific period in her writing career. There is seldom research on the entirety of her work and how she creates them. This paper attempts to do so.
