An important result of urbanization since the 18th cenrury has been the emergence and development of Metropolitan regions. So far on the related researches both at home and abroad, cognition of urban elements in Metropolitan region and conception of its combination of spatial-temporal patterns base on metropolitan region theories and empirical researches which are experienced in western developed countries and regions. However, the urbanization process in developing counties started 100-200 years later than that in the developed countries. One of the most important features distinguishing these countries from the developed countries in this process is the blured rural-urban distinction. As a consequence, urban elements may appear in and extend to different areas at different time in the urbanization process, causing unique spatial patterns which are different with typical western Metropolitan regions.Hardly perfectly explained by traditional theory, these special phenomena have raised new research issues and called for new theorectical explaination.Base on the above consideration, this thesis takes the Quanzhou extended metropolitan region(QZ EMR)where is located in southeastern coastal areas in Fujian as a case study to examine spatial-temporal patterns of urban elements and their combination from the perspective of In Situ urbanization, and derive some important findings. The main conclusions are summarized as follows:First, the thesis identifies the spatial-temporal patterns of urban elements in QZ EMR.It finds that the population of the central city is distributed in a small land areas with high population density, and most of the people are engaged in the secondary or tertiary industry, however the size of the population outside the central city is much bigger, with well developed desakota region in which urban and rural activities are mixed.Rural residential areas with multi-fimctions and broken shape account for the vast majority of construction land in desakota region, this feature is stronger in the early time, and there are significant differences among different regions of desakota. The lake of big central city and the weak industrial link between the core city and the surrounding regions are the other two features of QZ EMR differentiating it from the traditional metropolitan areas in developed countries and other developing countries. The development of multi-dimentional urban elements in terms of urban lifestyle is quite slow, especially in the desakota regions, and differences between the core region and surrounding areas is significant, too.Second, the thesis reveals temporal-spatial patterns of the combination of urban elements also in QZ EMR.It finds that the urban elements in terms of industrial development started the earliest and have expanded more quickly, which has served as a strong driving force for the changes in land use and people's life when it is combined with the high population density, however, the lifestyle shift from rural to urban has been the slowest. In the meantime, there are significant differences of in terms of the integrity and maturity of the urban elements' and their combination among different regions in QZ EMR.As a whole, the development of urban elements is more coordinated in the core region, but the most complex in the disakota region.Third, the thesis identifies the physical environment, the institutional arrangement, the management mode and the regional culture as the main factors causing the spatial-temporal patterns of urban elements and their combination in QZ EMR.The flat landform made urban elements accumulate easier than the rugged terrain, leading to formation of the core city and desakota region. The marine culture nurtures the entrepreneuren and innovative spirit of the local government and residents, providing a favorable condition for the emergence and development of urban elements in the desakota region. In the meantime, the institutional arrangement, including the household registration system, the land tenure system and other elements of the rural-urban dual society also have strong impact on the spatial-temporal patterns of urban elements and their combination in QZ EMR,making the core city hard to develop for a long time, and the desakota region easier to extend strongly in the form of in situ urbanization.
