Views From The Other Shores

This dissertation examines the new cognition of Chinese contemporary ink art in the context of globalization during the 21 st century,aiming to explore the new changes in Chinese contemporary ink art within the international contemporary art ecological pattern.The research focuses on two aspects: first,it combines western research on Chinese contemporary ink and its international promotion in the past two decades;second,it studies the schemes and creations of Chinese contemporary ink artists in global art interactions and discourses of diversity.Since 2000,with the continuous attention and research directed to Chinese contemporary art in the world,Chinese contemporary ink art,as an important part of Chinese contemporary art,has received more and more attention and interest.Many famous museums and art institutions in the world have held a variety of Chinese contemporary ink art exhibitions,academic forums,and seminars.Therefore,Chinese contemporary ink art is widely thought about and valued by the international art community and society.Although western researchers have perceptions of contemporary Chinese ink that are different from those in the Chinese context,they have since 2006 started to find the special charm and artistic significance of contemporary Chinese ink art.The publication of a large number of academic papers and monographs shows that contemporary Chinese ink art has become a rigorous academic research topic in western academic circles.This dissertation takes globalization and China's development as the research background,adopts parallel frameworks of contemporary interpretation and evaluation,combines comprehensive methods for literature analysis and case studies,surveys meanings conveyed by those artists who are displayed and studied in international art discourses,and observes how the West analyzes and views laterally the value and significance of contemporary Chinese ink art.It can be seen from this case study that in the international aspect,since the new century,Chinese contemporary ink artists have shown a dynamic dialogue with traditional art,integrating Chinese traditional aesthetics and philosophy with new international discourses,greatly expanding the diversity of Chinese contemporary ink art,and making it more open.Today,Chinese contemporary ink art is not only a part of Chinese contemporary art within the global cultural landscape,but also an effective form of art practice.Its international academic cognition and evaluation will also serve as feedback for its own historical writing and interpretation.
