Zhao Mengfu,as a giant in the history of Chinese painting and calligraphy,not only left numerous masterpieces,but also made a significant impact on theory of painting and calligraphy for later generations.However,Zhao's connoisseurship and collection activities of painting and calligraphy are often ignored by researchers.This dissertation attempts to start with Zhao Mengfu's connoisseurship and collection activities of painting and calligraphy and relevant issues,which are rarely involved by researchers,reconstruct the occurrence of Zhao's painting and calligraphy appreciation and collection activities from the perspective of region and time,and further investigate the formation of his idea,ability,social interaction and the formation of aesthetic taste.Based on that,this dissertation explores Zhao's insight on painting theory and various choices made in his painting practice.The dissertation reanalysizes the particularity of Zhao Mengfu's painting,through sorting out and interpreting important themes and works.The complementary and indispensable relations of connoisseurship and collection,theory of calligraghy and painting,and painting practice that accompanied Zhao Mengfu's whole life are clarified in detail.Particularly,through analyzing Zhao's painting style of deadwood,bamboo and stone and the landscape painting style of Li Cheng and Guo Xi school transformed by Zhao,this dissertation teases out the relationship between them,in order to emphasize the academic influence and significance of Zhao Mengfu.
