The Yuan Dynasty is a nomadic people in Chinese history, withmulti-culture, multi-politics and multi-arts. The slavery and the discrimination of peoples leadto the particularity on politics and culture in the Yuan Dynasty. However, the talented peoplein the Yuan Dynasty were emphasized. Though there was the contradiction between differentpeoples, the dominators realized the importance of appointing the talented people fromdifferent groups in order to maintain the national harmony. During the period of theunification of the Yuan Dynasty, the dominators of Mongolia group gradually put emphasison agriculture in order to lessen the contradiction between groups of people throughincreasing the output of crop. The leaders of Han could exert their advantages in the area ofpolitics and culture. In the Chinese history of painting, Zhao Mengfu is definitely worth beingmentioned, who had complicated background and exquisite ability on art and under theinfluence of these two factors mutually, he lived a legendary life.Zhao Mengfu’s art on pommel horse painting is deeply influenced by the masters onpommel horse painting in Tang and Song Dynasties (Northern Song Dynasty) and Li Gonglin.Receiving the tradition of predecessors’, he brought forth the new thought and established hisunique art on pommel horse painting. In the field of art, Zhao Mengfu is an artist withinnovative consciousness, who served as a link between past and future. The good education,as well as his own artistic consciousness, made him a person with deep thoughts on books,paintings, poetry, music and philosophy. In the history of Chinese painting, the painters whomastered many talents and were good at different kinds of arts, like Zhao Mengfu, are rare.Zhao Mengfu’s achievement and thought produce deep influence on the followers, whichearned him a high reputation.This thesis aims to do research on one aspect of the achievements of Zhao Mengfu’spainting, through collecting materials and clarifies Zhao’s achievements on pommel horsefrom the perspective of aesthetic with excellent pictures and texts. This thesis tries to showthe background, the reason, the characteristic and the influence of the formation of Zhao’spommel horse painting, with an aim to explore the influence of his spirit on modern painting. This thesis will throw a light on the idea that the painting spirit from the ancient time tomodern time leaves a deep influence to the creation of modern painting in elaborate style witha deep exploration on books and many other materials.
