Symbolism,Mobilization And Identity:Three Political Functions Of Music

Music is prevailing in human society.Music,as an artistic expression that contains human's rich emotion and complex cognition,can provide a variety of social functions for the public,such as aesthetic,enlightenment,entertainment.However,in the political field,some kinds of music can also perform a political function.Such music aims to express political information and shape "musical political expression".Plus,this sort of music may play a certain "musical political function".Music has diverse subjects and genres,but not all sorts of music have the relationship with the politics.Differ from ordinary music,music political expression only exists in political field,which can deliver political information.Therefore,based on the political expression of music,analysis of music political function is an important category of political culture studies.The politics liaises with the music.Although politics and music are independent systems of civilization which has their own formation logic and mature research fields,society is a complex giant system with diverse subsystems.These subsystems have mutual influence and dependence.These connections promote the emergence,development and change of new things.Meanwhile,they also irritate new theories,new methods and new logic based on cross-discipline.These new knowledge systems expand human cognition,enrich the achievements of human civilization,and constitute the basis for explaining the political expression of music.Music political expression can play a certain political function,and the symbol,mobilization and recognition are the three more common functions.Since ancient times,the example of music political expression is common,whether it is the "music and politics" in ancient Chinese rites and music civilization,or Plato mentioned in the important role of music to educate the people,or Aristotle on the correlation between music tonality and morality,can reflect the politician through music strong mobilization,symbolic role and shaping the value of emotion,thus by educating the people to promote social stability and other political purposes.From the perspective of the social value of music,music can enrich the human spirit,mobilize human emotions,inherit human culture and shape human civilization.Whether using express or metaphor,music political expression conveys political information in the political culture,and exists widely in the attitude of artistic expression and ideological communication.The overall architecture of this paper is the form of total score.The first chapter generally summarizes the basic connotation,internal association and relevant basic theory of music political expression.The final chapter summarizes the bidirectional of musical political expression and the possibility of extending musical political research from the perspective of responsibility.The middle three chapters are expanded in a parallel way,and all three functions are analyzed through the research level of "structure-process-function" in functionalism.First,the conceptual interpretation of the connotation of musical political expression is the basis and premise of this study.Not all musical expressions can achieve political functions.Different music have different political values.The evidence for defining whether a music has the condition of political expression is dependent on the difference of political culture and political communication amongst musics.Therefore,this study is not aimed at the artistic nature of music,but based on the perspective of political science.This research regards the music as an analytical material for fully exploring the political function of music.The logic of different political functions is different.Thus,the analytical emphasis of triple music political functions are different.First of all,the realization of music political symbol function lies in whether music symbol can realize the value turn of symbol through the presence of political meaning.In this process,it is necessary to strengthen the broad political meaning through the political meaning expressed by the musical symbol,the political status of the musical symbol and the power field given by the political authority such as political ceremony,so as to realize the musical political symbol.Secondly,the realization of music political mobilization function lies in whether the emotion in music political expression can arouse people's emotion,so as to mobilize people's thoughts and behaviors through music.Finally,the key to realize the function of music political identity lies in whether the identity information expressed in music can make the identity subject produce identity,sense of belonging music politics can give people political,sacred and authoritative music symbols.Political symbol of music is a musical symbol with political significance.The difference among symbols lies in the presence of meaning.Political symbol of music is not only a musical symbol,but also a musical symbol with full of political significance.With the enlightenment of Pierce's ternary theory of symbols,it can be found that symbolic meaning is rhetorical by way of likeness,indication and statute,thus expressing certain established meaning.The political symbol of music expresses a certain political meaning through the music symbol,and through the recognition,shaping and strengthening of the political meaning of the political authority,finally produces the music symbol with authority and sanctity,and then produces symbolic power.Although the national anthem is the iconic sample of music political symbol function,the music expression that exerts the political symbol function is far more than this.Therefore,this paper classifies "100 excellent songs issued by the Central Publicity Department" and combs the samples from the three perspectives of the national political symbol of music,the political party symbol of music and the political spirit symbol of music.It is found that the symbolic function of music politics has the characteristics of sanctity,rhetoric and power transformation,that is,the musical expression of political symbol is sacred,the political meaning of music needs to be realized through rhetoric,and the power in the process of political symbol of music is transformative.Second,the function of music political mobilization influences people's thoughts and behaviors through the value of music emotion,and promotes groups to participate in political movement in order to achieve political goals.Political mobilization is different from the static political symbol.The purpose of political mobilization is to influence people's thoughts and behaviors,and to realize the mobilization of political thought and political behavior by arousing and cultivating political emotion.The value of music can carry both political information and emotional expression.The change of melody and rhythm of music can arouse the audience's expectation and release emotion,and the political information clearly expressed in the lyrics make music more suitable for arousing and cultivating some political emotion.In addition,the social infectivity of music can affect a wider range of people,so music plays an indelible mobilization function in political situations such as the War of Resistance against Japan and the "going to the countryside".It is observed that the function of music political mobilization has the characteristics of realize music political mobilization.Third,the function of music political identity transmits emotion and cognition to citizens through the emotional information and text information of music,in order to promote citizens' political identity.Because the function of music political identity is based on civil identity,identity is not only the core element of understanding political identity,but also the core context of explaining music political identity.Political information in music cannot merely express identity-related content,but represent different identities.In the expression of musical political identity,whether it is the "innate" historical and cultural concept composed of blood and ethnic groups,or the formation of a certain political emotion by the "acquired" emotion and social cognition,or the political cognition and political tendency formed by interest-driven,It is necessary to judge the value of the information about identity in music expression.It is found that the music political identity has the characteristics of citizenship,stratification and boundary,that is,citizenship is the source of music political identity,the communication subject and audience of music political identity,and the cross-border nature of communication content with stratification and music cultural identity can cross the political boundary.In general,this paper focuses on the top-down category of music political expression,because it is this kind of music works that embodies the national feelings of generation after generation of Chinese people.However,in the broad space of political culture,the bottom-up expression is also a category that cannot be ignored in the musical political expression,such as the numerous music works of American rock that embody the spirit of rebellion.Therefore,political responsibility can play an important constraint role on musical political expression.Political responsibility can promote the orderly development of music political expression and maximize the function,and political responsibility is an important basis for improving the music propaganda system.On the one hand,political responsibility can enable the government to guide,improve and supervise the content,system and mechanism of music publicity.On the other hand,musical political expression also needs to be based on the creative motivation with a sense of political responsibility.In this regard,this topic also has a broader space for exploration.
