Sinology in Italy has a long history, and this field has received more and more attention from scholars in recent years. However,as an essential carrier of Chinese traditional culture, the dissemination of Chinese theatre in Italy is rarely concerned, and few related texts have been translated into Chinese. As the birthplace of ancient Rome and the cradle of the Renaissance,Italy has a considerable voice and representation in cultural and artistic activities in Europe and worldwide. This dissertation investigates the cross-cultural research and dissemination of Chinese theatre in Italy. It explores the viewpoints with Italian characteristics, which can be used as another "other" perspective for studying Chinese theatre. It will help us better examine our own culture and contribute to implementing the"Chinese culture going global”policy. This dissertation focuses on the dissemination and research of Chinese theatre in Italy from 1870 to 1970.The main reason for choosing this time is that in 1870,Italy was entirely unified, and the concept of"state" in its modern sense was more explicit. In 1970,after a century of changes, the People's Republic of China and the Italian Republic(Repubblica Italiana)formally established diplomatic relations. To ensure the integrity of this study, the situation before and after this period will also be involved. From the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century, science and technology were underdeveloped.Information related to Chinese theatre is spread chiefly in Italy through text or pictures. In chronological order, this dissertation attempts to outline the spread of Chinese theatre in Italy over the past century through the records of missionaries in China, travel notes of Italians visiting China, achievements in professional sinology and drama studies, and local Italian newspapers and magazines. The dissertation will also explore the focus and cognition of Italians at different stages and identities on Chinese theatre. It will be analyzed based on the historical process, the diplomatic situation of the two countries, the development of Italian sinology, and China's image in the West.In this way,the dissertation mainly discusses five aspects:the interpretation of Chinese theatre by Italian drama scholars relying on western literature during the unification of the country in the 19th century;Theatre records of visitors to China from the late 19th century to the first half of the 20th century; The study of Chinese theatre in the History of Chinese Literature by three Italian Sinologists published in the mid-20th century;Media reports and research monographs on Chinese theatre after its debut in Italy in 1955.On this basis, special investigations will be made on representative scholars and works in each stage.Including Antonio Paglicci Brozzi, the 19th-century dramatist,Giovanni Comisso, the first writer and journalist to visit China.Giuliano Bertuccioli,a Sinologist who wrote the first Italian edition of A History of Chinese Literature.Rosanna Pilone,a Sinologist and journalist, devoted her life to studying and promoting Chinese theatre.Try to deduce the development of Chinese theatre in Italy from the individual.Since the beginning of the new century, establishing the "Sino-Italian Cultural Cooperation Mechanism"has further promoted cultural exchanges. In 2019,Italy became the first G7 country to sign a memorandum of understanding on China's Belt and Road Initiative.2020 marks the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between China and Italy. The friendly exchanges between the two countries will open up a new situation for disseminating Chinese theatre in Italy and endow this dissertation with specific practical significance.
