Research On The Transmutation Of Modern Japanese Anti-war Literature (1889-1945)

As an important part of modern Japanese literature,anti-war literature both constructs a unique literary world with resourceful spiritual value,and carries an indelible impress of the time as history memory.It is also a precious mirror of history,with great academic value and significance to the contemporary peace and development.At present,academic circles still leave room for discussion on the definition of the concept of Japanese "anti-war literature".When it comes to the relation between wars and literature,especially literature related to Japanese anti-war literature,Chinese and Japanese academic circles tend to study a period or work or a character from the perspective of academic history.Different from that,this paper will expand the research perspective from the establishment of Japan Peace Hall in 1889 to the end of World War II in 1945 by focusing on the key wars in the development of modern Japan.Taking the historical evolution of anti-war literature as the research object,this paper uses interdisciplinary research methods such as the integration of literature and history.On one hand,it observes the Japanese writers’ awareness of war experience and war reflection through novels,reviews,diaries and other works and restores their creative experience through text analysis,thus outlining their attitudes towards war,such as examination,doubt,criticism,and awareness;on the other hand,on the basis of text study and analysis,it further demonstrates the characteristics of the occurrence,expansion and change of Japanese modern anti-war literature,so that to describe the process of the anti-war awareness and thought in Japanese literature in a whole area.the introduction.First of all,it sorts out and reviews researches at home and abroad,on that basis,it proposes the problem awareness of this paper and the main problems to be solved,that is,to analyze the different anti-war texture and core under the highly intensive concept of Japanese“anti-war literature",and focuses on the inheritance and transformation of the ideological attatchment behind the anti-war concept,as well as the evolution of the anti-war ideological context hidden in the historical field;second,it defines the important concepts involved in the paper,such as "war literature",“anti-war literature" and "modern literature".Under the times background of Japan’s modern national state entering the stage of imperialism,chapter 2 studies the anti-war movement for peace carried out by the Japanese Peace Association and Kitamura Tokoku.The beginning,evolution and current of Japanese anti-war literature are included in the research scope.By sorting out and expounding the evolution of the history of Japanese anti-war literature from the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895 to the Russo Japanese War,this paper expounds the rich development of Japanese anti-war literature at this period,outlines its basic framework and the knowledge map it contains,and points out its value and significance as an anti-war literature.Taking some writers’views on Outrage Incident as the object of study,chapter 3 analyzes the realistic performance of Japanese writers under the pressure of power politics by elaborating the core content of their discourse,so as to reflects the restriction of power politics on the development of anti-war literature.In the meanwhile,it also analyzes the war view of some writers in World War I based on Japanese nationalism,and deduces their logic and method of giving unique identity and connotation to Japanese civilization by drawing lessons from the "Western Wars".At the end of World War I,the democratic trend of thought in Japan developed and the atmosphere of freedom was relatively strong,the anti-war literature at that time was suppressed by the great rebellion and showed a recovery trend.This chapter also restores the process of anti-war literature in the period from confusion to finding a way out,and excavates and prompts the diversity and variety pedigree of the development of anti-war literature under the influence of the democratic trend.Starting from the binary opposition evaluation of the anti-war nature of Japanese literature,Chapter 4 divides the development of proletarian literature.It discusses the differences and causes of these two stages in the aspect of anti-war,and analyzes the root cause of the formation of contradictory cognition by taking proletarian writers’understanding and thinking of anti-war literature as clues;explores and analyzes the origin and ultimate direction of the anti-war consciousness hidden behind the rise and development of proletarian literature,and points out the specific phase of the anti-war literature in the perspective of the popular literature by outlining its conflict and contradiction process.In the decade of Showa(1935-1945),Japanese ruling power began to suppress the so-called heresy,intending to integrate the people into its designated value system.In the face of the development of militarism,Japanese literary circles have also increased the feature of fascism.Especially after "the July 7th Incident",it was impossible to resist as the writers and Japanese anti-war literature has entered the so-called "Dark Age".This chapter also discusses the possibility of the so-called“art resistance" of Japanese literature in the core context of "Promised Paradise",“Great East Asian New Order" and "Hakko Ichiu".In conclusion,based on the analysis of Japanese modern anti-war literature,this paper comes to a conclusion as follows:No.1,“anti-war literature" is neither suitable for writing in the way of“one-sided aspect" nor is solidified as a static concept.Different anti-war literature includes different narrative focus and nature endowments.Different thoughts and ideas are gradually enriched and built in the common context of“anti-war",so we should grasp them flexibly,which is reflected not only in the intermittence of inheritance,but also in the tension between different anti-war ideas;No.2,Japanese modern anti-war literature expresses its specific objectives with a concept,a movement,a certain thought or idea frequently.It has different intention direction and features of certain media and means;No.3,Japanese anti-war literature is in the dilemma between the concept of peace and the ideology of the emperor,and is constantly being extruded and suppressed by power politics.The root lies in the existence of“center and peripheral" and“local and foreign" binary opposition framework.This also makes the main line and flow of the development of modern Japanese anti-war literature always trapped on the framework of modern Japanese ruling power and the ideology of the system of Japanese emperor.
