In recent years,the New Mainstream Film represented by " Wolf Warrior 2","Operation Red Sea" and "Operation Me Kong" has emerged in the Chinese film world.With the "public appreciation" characteristics accepted by the state,the public,the arts and the market,it has become a new type of films that has continued and surpassed the main theme films,and has been concerned by the academia as an artistic and cultural phenomenon worthy of attention under the cultural background of China's rejuvenation.This paper explores it as a phenomenon of film culture from the perspective of public theory,focusing on the reason and performance of the "public appreciation" cultural characteristics of the New Mainstream Film.It includes the research on the growth of art public sphere which promotes the rise and development of the New Mainstream Film,and how the New Mainstream Film realizes the various forces or opinions in the public sphere activities in the film practice,that is,the research on the public orientation of the New Mainstream Film.The main body of this paper is divided into five parts:The first part is from the two aspects of reviewing the relevant public domain theories in China and the West and the history and reality of the rise of the New Mainstream Film,explaining the attributes of the New Mainstream Film as the public domain of art,and then demonstrating the rationality and effectiveness of studying the New Mainstream Film from the perspective of public theory.The basic proposition of public theory is based on people's "being together" and "sharing" in one world,advocating open,pluralistic and equal dialogue on public issues.Western scholars often study the public sphere from a political point of view,so they emphasize the divergent and critical role of dialogue.On this basis,they reach the necessary compromise,concession and consensus through the exchange of subjectivity.Chinese scholars mainly use the basic proposition of public theory to study social,literary and artistic issues,and emphasize seeking common ground while reserving differences through dialogue,so as to confirm common interests and achieve harmony consensus.This paper uses the public theory to study the New Mainstream Film,which takes the latter as the research object.From its name,to its later development and representative appearance,the New Mainstream Film is characterized by the combination and interaction of the six basic elements of the contemporary Chinese art public sphere(national reform strategy,government art policy,market economic environment,art media platform,artists and the public).It is the result of the joint efforts of several forces,such as the national film system reform,cultural industry policy issuance,the weakening and changing market of melodic films due to simplification and format,the game between Chinese film and Hollywood film market,the attention and criticism of various media platforms and the public,and the efforts of Chinese filmmakers.Its "public appreciation" characteristic is to conform to the situation of China's development as a big country,comprehensively consider the discussions,criticisms and expectations of all parties,and then achieve the consensus in the film practice.To study the New Mainstream Film from the perspective of public theory can explore the deep basis of its cultural characteristics,as well as the inherent law of this film type in public communication.The second part studies the expression of public consciousness and the rational spirit contained in the New Mainstream Film.This paper puts forward the characteristics of "four natures and one vein" of the New Mainstream Film,which are productive,political,aesthetic and individual subjectivity as four natures,and the overall cultural context throughout the new mainstream films as one vein."Four natures and one vein" is integrated into the film organically,presenting the style of the New Mainstream Film interactively,and the public consciousness expression of the new mainstream film is realized by the joint action of "four natures and one vein".That is to say,it is accomplished by the expression of public consciousness(political)of the national mainstream values and the public values consensus of the new mainstream film,the commercial operation(productive)of mutual construction and interaction between its art production and art consumption,the conformity of Chinese film aesthetic concept with the aesthetic expression of the world's advanced blockbusters(aesthetic),and the integration of film artists' personality and public aesthetic needs(individual subjectivity),and the historical culture and the culture of the times(one vein).The New Mainstream Film was born in the contemporary era,and the current Chinese realistic context gives it the opportunity to express the public consciousness of "four natures and one vein".The deep implication of the public consciousness expressed by the new mainstream film has reflect the rational spirit of the current era naturally,and the socialist core values are the condensation of this rational spirit.The new mainstream film transforms this public rational spirit into visual aesthetic image.The third part discusses the public orientation of the interpretation of the theme of the new mainstream film.Chinese scholars had constructed the theory of public interpretation,and the theme interpretation of the new mainstream film has the basic attributes of public interpretation.The new mainstream film public interpretation is realized in the public orientation of its theme interpretation,that is,the theme interpretation of the new mainstream film.The interpretation orientation always maintains a kind of conscious consciousness--consensus communication consciousness.Its main purpose interpretation should have the consensus of the country,society and individual,and should be the fusion expression of official dominant value orientation,elite purport and civilian feelings.Its main purpose interpretation is also infiltrated in the macro and micro constructions of the New Mainstream Film,offering the content of how it is extended,how the person acts,how the context is established,how the expression is developed and how the dialog has been occurred in the film.All the things mentioned above has been the effect expressed by the main purpose interpretation in the film.In the film practice,it is shown as follows: the interpretation of family and country feelings tends to be shared by the people,the expression of collectivism tends to be emphasized by individuals,the expression of national ideology tends to be humanistic,the promotion of revolutionary achievements tends to be imagined by the public,and the subconscious output tends to be the cognition of "community of human destiny".These interpretation orientations make it have the "public appreciation quality" of the film content.From the perspective of audience acceptance,the public experience and memory composed of the national public psychology and the survival experience of the community of common destiny are the basis for the realization of the public interpretation of the theme of the new mainstream films.The fourth part explores the art public paradigm of the new mainstream film creation.Paradigm has the characteristics of co-creation for community members,class standardization presented by model(paradigm),and common practice for community members.Summing up the achievements accumulated by the members of the new mainstream film community,it has the characteristics of public "paradigm" of film art for research.It mainly includes: the characterization paradigm of integrating the current mainstream ideology orientation of China with the popular heroic image characteristics of western movies,and the traditional Chinese "chivalrous" culture,mainly including the solitary hero mode of integrating individual heroism and collectivism,the "flaw" positive character mode of combining individual human complexity and dedication to national justice,and the chivalry mode.The main narrative paradigms are: the civilian perspective focuses on the important events in line with the core values,the plot setting of the mainstream narrative content follows the "market Convention" narrative mode,and the integration of the new mainstream film type framework.The narrative mode of "type strengthening" is combined with other types of film elements,and the technical paradigm of high-tech film technology to help the spread of national image is adopted.The creation of these paradigms makes the New Mainstream Films have the "public appreciation quality" of artistic forms.From the perspective of audience acceptance,the aesthetic common sense based on the prerequisite of aesthetic subject and acquired aesthetic experience is the basis of audience acceptance of the art public paradigm created by the new mainstream film.The fifth part analyzes the cultural effect of the new mainstream film public orientation.From the perspective of social development,although the new mainstream film is a kind of film art performance,it presents the cultural inclusive characteristics of national advocacy and public demand consensus,which plays an important role in the construction of the benign relationship between the state and society;from the perspective of theoretical construction,the artistic public domain attribute and its own public orientation of the new mainstream film have shown a growing platform of art public sphere,which plays an important role in the contemporary construction of China's art public sphere.From the perspective of the construction of Chinese films going to the world,the New Mainstream Films are playing an important role in the development of Chinese films going to the world by conveying the spirit of China,shaping the image of China and closing to the world's advanced films effect.The conclusion of the paper points out that the future development of the New Mainstream Film needs to work hard on the three cultural forces that promote its "public appreciation quality"-national mainstream cultural forces,elite cultural forces and mass cultural forces interacting,balancing and working together.At present,some film productions attach importance to national position and public acceptance,while elite cultural forces combine these two cultural forces functioning on the axis of art and performing of home court,which needs to be further improved.
