Crime refers specifically to the crimes committed in violation of the law, which is a challenge to the existing rules in society and a disruption to normal order.Among them, the criminal offense has a worse impact on the society than other illegal acts due to its odious nature of infringing upon individual or group. To govern or suppress crime after analyzing social and environmental factors such as the wealth gap,the income gap and the consumption gap is one of the important research methods of the economics of law and other existing social studies.According to the existing domestic and overseas literature, most of the researches discuss the issue between the income gap and the crime, but the research in China has space for improvement in theory and ignores some unavoidable realistic factors. This article focuses on the issue between the consumption gap and crime in China, and observes them from the perspective of economics and sociology based on the background of the increasing number of criminal offence and the continuously expanding consumption gap.Because of the visual uniqueness of the crime problems,it is more reasonable to use the consumption gap index instead of the income gap index theoretically.Based on the dominant trait of consumption and the recessive trait of income, the authenticity of the consumption gap may also be higher than the the income gap. After collating the relevant theoretical literature and practical research experience, the article built the impact theoretical framework between the two variables. After sorting out relevant theoretical literature and practical research experience, this paper builds an ultimatum game model from the perspective of psychological change of perpetrators, builds a classic crime economics model from the perspective of crime economics, and analyzes the theoretical influence relationship between consumption differences and criminal crimes. In the first theoretical model,we mainly studied the problem of "inequality rather than oligopoly" in crime, analyzed the relationship among crime, consumption difference and income level, and obtained the hypothesis that consumption difference affects crime. In the second theoretical model,we once again studied whether the consumption gap affects crime, and further obtained the hypothesis of the influence between the two.It lays a theoretical foundation for the subsequent empirical research. In the empirical research part, the main works of this paper are as follows: Firstly, the main reason for the increasing criminal offenses is the consumption gap rather than the level of income, that is,"inequality rather than want is the cause of trouble" reflects the criminal choice of the residents in our country.Based on the national time series data from 1990 to 2017,we use the structural vector autoregressive model(SVAR)to analyze the relationship among the criminal offense rate, the urban-rural consumption gap and the residents' disposable income. The results of the detailed pulse analysis chart and the variance decomposition table show that changes in disposable income do not have a significant impact on the criminal offense rate, but the increasing consumption gap will enhance the criminal offense rate.At the same time, the influence of the consumption gap is different according to different categories of criminal offenses. The consumption gap has a positive impact on both property and violent crime, but the impact on the former is greater than that on the latter. This article specifically analyzes the main reasons that affect China's criminal offenses, especially explain the core issue of "income or gap".Secondly, after using the time series to judge the relationship between the consumption gap and criminal offense,we conduct a more detailed analysis on how the consumption gap affects criminal offense.First,a static analysis regression is constructed based on China's provincial panel data, and we once again determine the fact that the urban-rural consumption gap has a positive impact on criminal offense.Second,we have also expand the concept of the consumption gap and analyze the impact of various types of consumption gap on criminal offense, such as the consumption gap among different income classes of urban residents, the consumption gap between the government and residents, the consumption in different periods, etc.Third,we also analyze the consumer goods categories while analyzing the issue of consumption gap to explore the influence rules and reasons between them.Thirdly, while analyzing the impact of the consumption gap on criminal problems,we introduce the important variable of house price and analyze the relevance among the three.First, based on the influence paths among house price, consumption gap and criminal offense,we analyze the important role of consumption gap as mediating variables between house price and criminal offense. On the one hand, housing,as a basic element of life, has a direct impact on crime;on the other hand, house price,as an important consumer and investment product, has an impact on the consumption gap,and further has an indirect impact on criminal offense.Second, based on the spatial regularity of the gap between criminal offense and consumption in China, the possible spatial characteristics are considered in the analysis process of using panel data. Therefore, this article analyzes the above three variables through the mediation effect model and the space panel model. The traditional research on the relevance between unfair distribution and crime mostly uses the indicator of income gap,but this article analyzes the impact of consumption gap on criminal offense. The research idea traces the nature of the occurrence of criminal offense and emphasizes the real influence process between them.Meanwhile, the analysis process of this article is essentially related to a series of relevant issues, and has attempted to explain and discuss some existing unique social phenomena and focus issues, such as why the continuous increase of residents' income has not effectively reduced the occurrence of criminal offense; How the behavior of showing off wealth lead to criminal offense; How the rising house price affected residents' consumption behavior and criminal choice. The research of this paper observes the problem of criminal crime from the perspective of economics and puts forward suggestions on the basis of the research conclusions.
