Spatial ability is an important component of the human intelligence structure.Recent research in psychology and learning science has shown that spatial ability can be improved through teaching and training,and the junior high school stage is a critical period for spatial ability improvement.The research focuses on spatial ability improvement in mathematics subject education and explores how to effectively improve the spatial ability of junior high school students by applying 3D CAD to regular curriculum teaching.Based on theories of children's spatial cognitive development,theories related to visual-spatial cognition and multimodal theory,the thesis explores how to improve spatial ability based on multiple modes of representation,and develops a 3D CAD-based spatial ability improvement program for junior high school students,including the organization of teaching activities,the design of learning environment,the formulation of teaching strategies and the selection of evaluation rubrics.In order to test the feasibility of the program in real classroom scenario,two rounds of experiments were conducted based on the junior high school mathematics curriculum:the first round was an exploratory research to initially test whether junior high school students' spatial ability could be improved by the program;on this basis,the second round extended the research objects,improved the evaluation rubrics,and further improved and optimized the experimental program.The main contributions of the research are as follows.(1)The ways of spatial ability improvement were discussed from the perspectives of children's spatial cognitive development theory,visual-spatial cognitive theory and multimodal theory,and so forth.The current status of research and practice on spatial ability improvement in subject education,especially mathematics education,were systematically sorted out,and the research directions of spatial ability improvement were summarized.(2)From the perspective of modes of representation,a 3D CAD-based spatial ability improvement program was constructed.Through enhancing visual-spatial cognitive activities,the program completes the visual presentation and communication of teaching activities in 3D CAD application system,and finally enhances students'ability of drawing,promotes students to construct clear spatial concepts and improves their spatial ability.(3)For real classroom scenario and relying on the junior high school mathematics curriculum,a corresponding empirical research is conducted to verify,improve and optimize the 3D CAD-based spatial ability improvement program,and to conduct practical exploration of spatial ability improvement integrated with regular curriculum teaching.The corresponding curriculum can become a model case of spatial ability improvement in subject education.The research shows that the 3D CAD-based spatial ability improvement program can significantly improve the 3D spatial ability,especially the 3D spatial visualization,of junior high school students,and there is no gender difference in this improvement.The research in this thesis helps to address the challenges of spatial ability improvement in subject education and effectively promote teaching practices oriented to spatial ability improvement in classroom scenario.
