Music during exercise can improve performance.Previous studies have shown that listening to music in synchronous with the rhythm of exercise during running,a periodic aerobic exercise, can extend the exertion time of exercisers and increase the distance of running. However, most studies in this area have focused on the description of phenomena, and there is no systematic theory to explain why synchronized music improves periodic aerobic performance. This study attempts to explain the effect of synchronized music on the performance of periodic aerobic exercise by using the power model theory of self-regulation.Self-regulation refers to the ability of people to overcome innate desires, habits or inherent behavioral responses and to maintain adaptive behaviors.According to the power model of self-regulation,different types of self-regulation activities all consume the same limited resources. If resources consumed by prior self-regulation activities are not immediately restored, the individual will enter a state of self-regulation depletion, which reduces periodic aerobic performance. In order to investigate whether the improving effect of synchronized music on the performance of periodic aerobic exercise is due to the fact that synchronized music alleviates the self-regulation depletion of exercisers, this study systematically investigated the influence of synchronized music on the self-regulation depletion of college students during periodic aerobic exercise through a three-part study,a total of five experiments.Part One: The effects of synchronized music on factors affecting self-regulation depletion(subjective fatigue, attention and mood)during periodic aerobic exercise were investigated. The results showed that synchronized music could reduce the subjective fatigue of college students(n=36),make the focus of attention more external, and improve the mood during exercise. This indicates that the periodic aerobic exercise program designed in this study combined with music materials can have a positive effect on the influencing factors of self-regulation,providing supporting evidence that synchronous music may alleviate the self-regulation depletion of college students during periodic aerobic exercise.Part two: From the behavioral level, two experiments were conducted to explore the effect of synchronized music on the self-regulation depletion of college students(n=61)in actual exercise and planned exercise during periodic aerobic exercise. The results show that the two kinds of self-regulation depletion of college students are lower under synchronous music, and synchronous music can alleviate the self-regulation depletion of actual exercise and planned exercise in periodic aerobic exercise.Part three: Starting from the level of EEG,two experiments were conducted to explore the effects of synchronized music on the brain electrophysiological activities related to self-regulation depletion in college students during periodic aerobic exercise.Firstly, the effect of synchronized music on EEG of college students(n=22)and its relationship with self-regulation depletion during periodic aerobic exercise were investigated. Results showed that electromyography and EEG indicators indicated that synchroized music increased motor unit recruitment, reduced communication between sensorimotor areas, and inhibited neural resynchronization in central motor regulation. This indicates that synchronous music can help college students regulation periodic aerobic exercise more automatically and alleviate self-regulation depletion.Secondly,ERP technique was used to reveal the influence of synchronized music on the cognitive neural process of self-regulation depletion in college students(n=36)during periodic aerobic exercise. The results showed that, compared with the regulation condition, the incubation period of N2 peak was shorter, the incubation period of P3 peak was shorter, and the average amplitude of P3 was larger. The results show that synchronous music can make college students process information faster, devote more attention and lose less self-regulation in the process of self-regulation inhibition regulation.According to the above experimental results, based on the self-regulation strength model, this paper puts forward the idea of self-regulation depletion relief to explain the effect of synchronous music on the improvement of college students’ periodic aerobic exercise performance.Synchronous music in periodic aerobic exercise alleviates the self-regulation depletion of college students by positively influencing factors of self-regulation depletion, and consistent results are also found at the electrophysiological level. The improvement effect of synchronous music on the performance of periodic aerobic exercise may come from this.
