The Chinese passenger car industry has formed a relatively complete industrial system in the past 70 years of development,forming six major industrial clusters and several enterprise groups,and the overall level is constantly improving.However,the key issue currently faced by passenger car companies is enterprise upgrading.Enterprise upgrading is a process centered on the value chain,including process upgrading,product upgrading,functional upgrading,and inter chain upgrading.Through technological innovation and resource optimization configuration,it improves production efficiency,increases added value,and achieves high added value enhancement.Although the academic community has not yet reached a consensus on the upgrading of passenger car enterprises,this article will focus on "which capability factors are the antecedents of passenger car enterprise upgrading" and "through what mechanisms these factors promote upgrading" to study the connotation,dominant factors,and mechanisms of enterprise upgrading.This article aims to preliminarily study the dimensions of enterprise upgrading and provide a foundation for further research on enterprise upgrading.Firstly,through literature review,relevant research on enterprise upgrading was analyzed,and the characteristics of enterprise upgrading were summarized based on the theories of cognitive and technological capabilities.Secondly,select Great Wall Motor as a typical sample to collect case data,extract the core characteristics of enterprise upgrading through the coding method of Grounded theory,determine the core dimensions of enterprise upgrading,and find that management cognition,market cognition and technical ability are the key factors affecting enterprise upgrading.Finally,by comparing and analyzing the case data of 12 typical enterprises worldwide,the adequacy of enterprise upgrading dimensions was deepened.Research has found that(1)management cognition,market cognition,and technological capability promote enterprise upgrading,and(2)their dominant positions vary at different stages,but each enterprise is jointly influenced by these three factors.These research results have certain reference value for theoretical research and practical applications of enterprise upgrading.Finally,based on the functional mechanism model of enterprise upgrading,this study takes Chinese passenger car enterprises as an example to study the internal logic of the mutual evolution of cognitive and technological capabilities in promoting the upgrading of passenger car enterprises.Through evidence from 1979 to 2020,this study investigated the dynamic upgrading process of Chinese passenger car enterprises,revealing the evolutionary mechanisms of management cognition,market cognition,and technological capabilities in promoting enterprise upgrading.Research has found that the upgrading of Chinese passenger car enterprises is achieved through a process of "triggering construction integration".Among them,triggering change follows the logic sequence of "triggering change-technology introduction-identity acquisition",constructing independent innovation to "product heterogeneity-cognitive reversal-digestion and absorption",and integrating enterprise upgrading follows the logic sequence of "breakthrough innovation-leading edge-cognitive evolution" to achieve upgrading.In the process of enterprise upgrading,there is a "temporal mechanism" between management cognition,market cognition,and technological capability.In the order of "management cognition technological capability market cognition management cognition",the results of the previous stage will serve as the trigger point for the next stage,triggering the next stage of upgrading.In summary,this study analyzes the factors that affect enterprise upgrading from three dimensions: "management cognition","market cognition",and "technological capability",revealing the "temporal mechanism" of these factors.In the research content,the upgrading of enterprises will be separated from dimensions such as "technological capability","institutional determination","technological innovation effect",and "policy implementation effect".An attempt will be made to establish a mechanism with multiple dimensions such as "management cognition","market cognition",and "technological capability" to solve the problem of upgrading mechanisms for China’s passenger car industry and enterprises with similar scenarios.
