A Study Of Orhan Pamuk’s Literary Works

Pamuk is a contemporary Turkish literary giant and the winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize in Literature.The Pamuk Research today has achieved fruitful results so far,but still much to improve.This dissertation takes Pamuk’s 13 representative works as the research object and comprehensively uses text reading,comparative analysis and interdisciplinary research methods especially social and historical criticism,which will be a systematic study of Pamuk and his works,and from which we summarized and condensed a new feature of Pamuk’s works,namely "Turkishness".Our research is able to discover many new features of the writer’s works,meanwhile,we can also supply supplements to the previous studies and solve some problems that plagued today’s Pamuk Rearsch,such as transmutation of Pamuk’s creation,the relationship between Pamuk and contemporary Turkey,the weak rearch on some of Pamuk’s works and the correlation between previous studies to a certain degree.In addition,the research will help us deepen the understanding of the Turkish literatue tradition,and it is also an in-deepth exploration of the Turkish nationality and the Culture History of the Ottoman times and the Idea History of the Turkish Republic.The "Turkishness" embodied in Pamuk’s works can be summarized into three points,namely intermediary,cultural conflict and interweaving,and melancholic soul in his hometown.The Turkish literary tradition is the cultural background of Pamuk’s "Turkishness".Pamuk’s literary creation is closely related to the Turkish literary tradition.First,his works have inherited the charm of Ottoman Diwan literature,which is mainly reflected in the mysterious bitter love plot in his novels and the sad expression in the prose.In addition,Pamuk also inherited the essence of Turkish new literature,mainly including his reference to the novels of the Republic era and modern Turkish new poetry.The theme of Pamuk’s work embodies an intermediary idea.Intermediary is Pamuk’s deconstruction and new construction of modern and contemporary Turkishness,which is embodied in Pamuk ’s dissolution of three sets of binary oppositions: First,the dissolution of binary opposition between literature and politics,that is a kind of dynamic balance concept;the second is the dissolution of binary opposition between religion and secularity,that is,a conservative modernity concept;the third is the dissolution of binary opposition between East and West,namely Pamuk’s New Orientalism.The literary images of Pamuk’s works profoundly reflected the conflict and interweaving of multiculturalism in modern and contemporary Turkish society,and it is also the unconscious reflection of modern and contemporary Turkishness in Pamuk’s works.At the macro-level,Turkish social image in his work is a turbulent cultural space,which can be divided into Ottoman Turkish social image and modern and contemporary Turkish social image.At the micro-level,literary characters often reflect the complicated historical interweaving of Turkey since modern times.It specifically includes female characters,leftist characters,and Islamic fundamentalist characters.The literary aesthetics characteristics of Pamuk’s works can be summarized as the melancholic soul of his hometown.It is Pamuk’s memory of the historical Turkishness essence,and also the most exquisite,passionate and deep part of Pamuk’s "Turkishness".It specifically focuses on four aesthetic images: the first is the "Hüzün" aesthetics,and at which we propose two new opinions on the "Hüzün" aesthetics from the perspective of Turkishness,namely the rhythmic decline of the late Ottoman Empire and the nomadic culture origin.The second is Istanbul aesthetics,which can be subdivided into roaming aesthetics and collection aesthetics.The third is death aesthetics,which can be subdivided into two aspects: Anadolu’s mystic death aesthetics and Western sublime death aesthetics.The fourth is the aesthetics of miniature paintings,which is reflected in the correlation between the strong sense of color in Pamuk’s works and the bright colors of the miniature paintings,as well as the correlation between Pamuk’s multi-voice narrative and the scatter perspective painting method in the miniature paintings.To be brief,Turkishness Research will open a new horizon for us to view the series of literary works of Pamuk in a more in-deepth,three-dimensional and systematic way,and will also lay a solid foundation for the promotion of further Pamuk Research.
