Sustainable Development Strategy For Conservation Of Archives During The Republican Era Of China

The archives of the Republican Era of China refer to the original records of all social activities of political parties,regimes,military,social organizations and individuals at all levels during the period of the Republic of China.These archives,taking paper,photos,vinyl records,etc.as carriers,including various formats such as decrees,letters,telegrams,etc.,can reflect the changes of the country,social development,institutional changes and even personal history.The archives of the Republican Era of China have their own characteristics from the aspects of formation,production,carrier material composition,content composition,preservation and management.Therefore,the protection of archives during this period is not only to preserve the history of a historical stage,but also to protect the memory of this period.In general,it is of great value to study the conservation of archives in this period.However,the existing domestic and foreign research results have shown that scholars’ research on the conservation of archives during the Republican Era of China are not large and systematic enough to guide the practice.In addition,during the Republican Era of China,there were continuous wars,unsuitable preservation environment and man-made destructions which resulted to high acidic level of paper,fragile ink and severely damaged archives.There is a serious disconnect between the practical needs and the existi ng research results,so it is urgent to strengthen the research of the conservation of archives during the Republican Era of China.In view of this,this paper takes the sustainable development strategy for the conservation of archives during the Republica n Era of China as the research object,constructs a theoretical sustainable developing model for the archival conservation based on the Pressure-State-Response model,explains the sustainable developing elements of this model,and establishes the "optimal solution" of the sustainable developing conservation of archives during the Republican Era of China.Through literature research,sampling survey,in-depth interviews and other methods,this paper systematically understands the current situation of the con servation of archives during the Republican Era of China,comprehensively analyzes the practical practices and problems faced by the sustainable developing conservation of archives during the Republican Era of China,and forms a "realistic solution" for the sustainable developing conservation of archives during the Republican Era of China.Through the correlation of "realistic solution" and "optimal solution",the sustainable development strategy of the archives during the republican Era of China is established,which is convenient for each institution to form its own archives protection strategies.The full text is divided into eight chapters:Chapter 1.The introduction.This chapter introduces the research background and significance,summarizes existing research results,explains and defines the concepts of archives during the Republican Era of China and the conservation of archives during the Republican Era of China.On this basis,research methods and innovations are discussed.Chapter 2.The theoretical construction of the sustainable developing conservations of archives during the Republican Era of China based on PSR model.On the basis of analyzing the applicability of PSR(pressure-state-response)model in the conservation of archives during the Re publican Era of China,this paper constructs the PSR model framework for the sustainable developing conservation of archives during the Republican Era of China,and accordingly constructs the element system of sustainable developing conservation of archive s during the Republican Era of China from three aspects in terms of pressure,state and response.This element system based on sustainable development theory is the "optimal solution" and needs to be considered first when formulating the strategy for the conservation of archives during the Republican Era of China.Chapter 3.The conservation research of archives during the Republican Era of China.This chapter determines the research plan of the conservation of archives during the Republican Era of China in respect with three aspects,in terms of the selection of research objects,the determination of research contents and the selection of research methods.After that,a thorough and systematic on-site investigation was carried out in 23 selected archives in stitutions from aspects of archive status,ten prevention,filing boxes,environmental control etc.,and the results of the investigation were comprehensively analyzed.At present,the protection state of the archives during the Republican Era of China is spontaneous and demand-driven,presenting with complexity and diversity,which constitutes a bottom-up protection situation.This concludes the "realistic solution" for the conservation of archives during the Republican Era of China,and lays the foundation for the subsequent text.Chapter 4.The formulation of the strategy for the conservation of archives during the Republican Era of China.This chapter aims at the gap between the "realistic solution" and the "optimal solution" discussed previously and ana lyzes the basis,principles,as well as the framework of the strategy for the conservation of archives during the Republican Era of China.Chapter 5.The original protection strategy aspect of the sustainable development strategy for the conservation of ar chives during the Republican Era of China.According to the sustainable development strategy f ramework of the conservation of archives during the Republican Era of China,prioritizing the protection of original archives is the basic requirement,therefore this chapter,starting from the hierarchical protection of archives of the Republic of China,constructed a rating protection index system of the Republic of China consisting of5 secondary indicators and 65 tertiary indicators.From the perspective of the whole,the part and the individual,the system puts forward three protection strategies: the preventive protection for undamaged files,the governance protection for disaster affected files and the customized repair for damaged files.Chapter6.The regenerative protection strategy aspect of the sustainable development strategy for the conservation of archives during the Republican Era of China.According to the framework of archives conservation strategy of the Republic of China,considering the application of information technology and its role in the conservation of archives of the Republic of Chin a,this chapter studies the application of three major regenerative protection technologies of archives of the Republic of China,including microfilming,lossless digitalization,and simulation replication,and analyzes the regenerative protection strategy of "dual-mode combination" with digital records and analog records.Chapter 7.The guarantee strategy aspect of the sustainable strategy for the conservation of archives during the Republican Era of China.Considering the different conditions of various institutions and the lack of sufficient and unified support at the national level and according to PSR model,this chapter explains the implementation of the promoting archives conservation stragety of the Republic of China from four aspects: system guarante e,standard guarantee,fund guarantee and talent guarantee.Chapter 8.The summary and the research prospect.This chapter summarizes the basic conclusions of the research,especially how to combine the twofold implementation in terms of the institutional bottom-up strategy and national top-down strategy,to shorten the gap between the "realistic solution" and "optimal solution" of the conservation of archives during the Republican Era of China.This chapter also points out the limitations of this paper and puts forward the future research prospects.
