Interpreters often encounter difficulties such as accents, equipment problems, and unfamiliar terminologies.According to Gile’s Effort Model, difficulties in interpreting tasks may challenge interpreters’ cognitive processing capacity and affect their effort allocation, thus lowering the quality of interpreting.A qualified interpreter may take different strategies to tackle those difficulties and anticipation is one of those strategies. This report, based on the author’s interpreting practice at the China-Vietnam Forum on FDI and Sustainable Development in the New Era,attempts to discuss the positive effects of the anticipation strategy in consecutive interpreting. This report has six chapters. The first chapter introduces the event and the parties of the interpreting activity. The second chapter gives a detailed description of the pre-task preparation process, including background information, glossary, and other preparations. The third chapter describes the interpreting process, the difficulties, and the main strategies adopted. The fourth chapter presents the feedback from the client and the attendants of the forum while the fifth chapter uses examples to illustrate different types of anticipation the author made and discusses the positive impact of the anticipation strategy on interpreting quality. Finally, chapter six presents conclusions to the report. It is hoped that this report could generate discussions on the anticipation strategy and be helpful to future interpreters.
