Since the publication of the first batch of Japanese-Chinese/Chinese-Japanese translation textbooks(Thereafter referred to as Japanese translation textbooks)in China’s mainland in the 1930 s,more than 200 such textbooks have been published so far.During the past 90 years, these textbooks, which demonstrate the wisdom and effort of their compilers, have recorded the evolution of Japanese translation teaching in China. However,as of today, there has had no full-scale and systematic examination of Japanese translation textbooks. At present,to meet the profound changes undergoing in social demands, the translation discipline, and Japanese language education, reforming Japanese translation teaching has become essential.Since textbooks spearhead Teaching reform,it is urgent that research be conducted in Japanese textbook research. In view of the scanty research on Japanese translation textbooks, the limited scope of textbook investigation, the sporadic research content, this dissertation takes Japanese textbooks as its research object. After looking into the historical development of these textbooks,it builds a theoretical framework of for the study of Japanese textbooks based on the theory of textbook conception and regulates what ideal Japanese translation textbooks should be.Guided by this framework,it analyzes the existing textbooks from various perspectives, including their use, systems, and curriculum concepts. The author argues that the textbook concept of Japanese translation textbooks consists of three layers, principles, ontology, and demonstration. The principle is the root of the textbook concept, the ontology, its essence, and the demonstration,it specific realization.Whether a textbook can achieve its ideal form is determined by the ontology and is manifested in the curriculum concept of translation textbooks, the concept of translation textbook design, and the teaching concept of translation textbooks. This research arrives at the following conclusion: Japanese translation textbooks should be compiled with appropriate text conceptions and be internally promoted with achievements in translation research.Effort should be made to increase the disciplinary value of translation courses, appropriately integrate into itself translation teaching mythology, and highlight the professionalism of translation textbooks. The dissertation consists of eight chapters. The first chapter is an introduction. The second chapter is the literature review. The third chapter provides a historical overview of Japanese translation textbooks from the late Qing Dynasty and the early period of the Republic of China. The fourth chapter introduces the theory of textbook conception and,on its basis, builds the theoretical framework for the study of translation materials from the perspective of textbooks. It also proposes the ideal state of Japanese translation textbooks.Chapters 5 to 7 study the actual state of the concept of Japanese translation textbooks. The fifth chapter discusses the teaching concept of textbooks on the part of undergraduates and teachers of Japanese based on a questionnaire survey and their needs analysis. The sixth chapter studies the concept of textbook design by analyzing the structural problems of Japanese translation textbooks. The seventh chapter focuses on the curriculum concept of textbooks, analyzing the value orientation of translation courses and their impact on translation textbooks.Chapter VIII is the conclusion.
