| Modiano is one of the representative writers of the New Fable School,a literary genre in the late 20 th century. In the creation of cycles over and over again the key issue of memory, inheriting the French literary tradition while assembling his own literary map in a cyclical process. In terms of creative methods,Modiano inherited the new creative techniques of the New Fiction School novel art,and also tried to make up for their shortcomings in the connotation of their works. He adheres to the requirements of the New Fiction Party for the authenticity of novel creation, and in his works,he uses the social history of World War II and post World War II as materials, reflecting the face of 20 th century society. At the same time,he combined his own imagination of recollecting experiences to construct a mysterious world of virtual and real worlds in his novels. In terms of the creative connotation of his works, his beach people image field is rich in memories of the battered history of various ethnic groups, and has profound reflection and vigilance significance for future generations. The first chapter of this article first sorts out the theoretical basis related to cultural memory and literary memory, the relationship between cultural memory and literary memory, and explains the theoretical basis of the memory phenomenology theory proposed by Paul Lico. Then, combining Modiano’s dual cultural background and the memory of social and cultural trends,it attempts to understand the creative background of Modiano’s literary memory.Based on the first chapter, the second chapter elaborates the literary memory and narration in Modiano’s works from three aspects. The author subdivides them into three types of narrative memory: image memory, spatial memory, and plot memory. The main theme is his work "Dark Store Street" from the 1970 s."Dark Shop Street" was published by the author in 1978 and won the French Gongoor Prize for Literature that year. This novel is not only one of Modiano’s representative works with mature writing techniques, but also one of the first six novels translated into China. The uniqueness of this work lies in that Modiano gradually faded away from the traces of the history of World War II in the novel after this work, and formed his own unique literary style with a stable narrative structure combined with a changing social and historical environment. Therefore, the author chooses this novel as the focus of his research, attempting to interpret the relationship between memory and narration in the author’s works. The third chapter analyzes the identity of beach people in Modiano’s literary memory, taking three representative works "Star Plaza","Dark Store Street",and "Horizon" of Modiano’s early, middle, and late periods as examples."Star Plaza" is Modiano’s first work, which won the Diamond Pen Tip Award just after its release. In this work, the traces of war are the clearest, contradictions are the most prominent, and the identity issues of the protagonist are the most vivid. The identity issues of many exiles of different nationalities in "Dark Store Street" are intertwined and serve as clues to each other, making it the representative work that best supports the author’s broad vision."The Horizon" is the most poetic memory style of Modiano and his own philosophy of a late creative work.In the three works, identity issues are intertwined with self-identity,specifically manifested as: the crisis of identity ownership, the loss of individual discourse power, the dissolution of self subjectivity, and other issues. In response to these issues, the author elaborates Modiano’s thinking and efforts through three works, specifically the awakening of the character’s self-consciousness,the exploration of reconstructing memories and self-identity,and the reflection and establishment of cultural identity attribution. The contradictory relationship between memory and identity is one of the most difficult problems that have plagued generations of beach people. The fourth chapter discusses three types of female beach people in Modiano’s literary memory: radical, missing, and mysterious young women after the war,and interprets the tragic fate of the cyclic feminine characters in Modiano’s novels. The fifth chapter summarizes the nihility theme of Modiano’s literary memory based on the second, third, and fourth chapters, analyzes his inheritance of the French literary tradition to the creation of his own beach people image field, and summarizes the philosophical and practical implications of beach people. |
