This paper probes into "Trace" in Patrick Modiano' works,centering chiefly on four dimensions---the theme of the trace,the elements borrowed from detective fictions,the influence from Marcel Proust and the image of "the Missing---the Tracker".With his marvelous art of memory-stitching,Modiano has created living multiple worlds filled with unremitting pursuit,remote and illusive memory,random juxtaposition in space and time as well as nerve-wracking atmosphere.This paper aims at presenting the ternary significance between Modiano and "Trace".1)The past is our root,and only by knowing the trace of our past,will we focus on the present and look father into the future.2)The process of finding the trace is the very process of anti-obliteration obliteration while tracing in itself has undoubtedly constituted the greatest significance.3)Courage is equally required in both recording our scars and recollecting things in the past,which,to life,functions as a kind of consolation and cure.
