Since the reform and opening up,China has attached great importance to the development and construction of cities. From rural industrialization to land development and then to the tertiary industrialization of cities, the scale of cities has been expanding in geographical space, industries have gathered in cities to form industrial parks and give full play to the agglomeration effect, the population has been continuously flowing from rural sources to cities, and the urbanization rate has been increasing. However, the high-speed urbanization has not only brought high-speed economic growth to China, but also brought a series of problems and challenges. This requires us to turn the city from a single self-development model to the development model of "circle layer" and "block" urban agglomeration.Compared with a single big city, the biggest advantage of urban agglomeration is that it has a regional spatial structure that a single big city does not have.A reasonable regional spatial structure will help the coordinated development of regional economy.Compared with the single center spatial structure, the urban agglomeration with multi center spatial structure is more conducive to narrow the regional gap, enhance the economic ties and information exchange between cities, and realize the coordinated development of regional economy. How to give full play to the advantages of this spatial structure and how this spatial structure plays a role in the coordinated development of regional economy is one of the key problems to be solved in this paper.Firstly, this paper combs the relevant literature at home and abroad on regional spatial structure, coordinated development of regional economy, the impact of regional spatial structure on regional economy and the development of urban agglomeration.Based on the above literature and existing theoretical basis, this paper constructs the theoretical framework of this research, and uses the research method of combining theoretical research and empirical research to explore the relationship between them.In the theoretical framework part, based on the urban system theory of new economic geography, this paper uses mathematical model to deduce how the multi center spatial structure evolved from the single center spatial structure.Secondly,it expounds the action mechanism of multi center spatial structure affecting the coordinated development of regional economy from three aspects: micro, meso and macro:(1)the division mechanism of multi center spatial structure affecting the coordinated development of regional economy.(2)Multi center spatial structure is the sharing mechanism that affects the coordinated development of regional economy.(3)Multi center spatial structure is the government intervention mechanism that affects the coordinated development of regional economy. Then, based on the theoretical framework, the empirical design is carried out,and the panel data model is selected to study the relationship between the multi center spatial structure and the coordinated development of regional economy. At the same time, the coordinated development of regional economy of urban agglomeration is measured from the single index system and the composite index system respectively. The former is used for the economic coordination of cities within the urban agglomeration, and the latter is used for the overall economic coordination of urban agglomeration. In addition, this paper also designs four kinds of index measure multi center spatial structure. For the test of the three mechanisms, this paper uses the intermediary effect model to identify the causal relationship between the two,so as to make the conclusion more reliable. The main conclusions of this paper are as follows:(1)the economic polycentric index of urban agglomeration in the Yangtze River Delta is gradually declining, and the urban interior begins to develop to network polycentric; The multi center spatial structure index of Beijing Tianjin Hebei Urban Agglomeration,Pearl River Delta urban agglomeration,Chengdu Chongqing urban agglomeration,Central Plains urban agglomeration and urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River is rising, indicating that the trend of economic resources gathering to the core metropolitan area is more obvious. The change of population polycentric index of the six urban agglomerations tends to be relatively stable, because China’s registered residence system restricts the free flow of population to a certain extent. The economic agglomeration of urban agglomeration is significantly higher than that of population agglomeration.(2)The higher the degree of economic multi center of urban agglomeration, the higher the degree of coordinated development of urban economy within urban agglomeration.Cultivating multi center urban agglomeration is conducive to forming a reasonable regional spatial structure and eliminating urban gap and regional inequality. On the whole, the cultivation of multi center spatial structure also plays an obvious role in promoting the coordinated development of the overall economy of urban agglomeration. On the other hand, the conclusion of population multi center has obvious heterogeneity.Different urban agglomeration population multi centers have different effects on the coordinated development of urban economy within the urban agglomeration. For urban agglomerations with high level of urban economic development such as the Yangtze River Delta and Beijing Tianjin Hebei, guiding population agglomeration will narrow the urban gap. However, the agglomeration direction of the two cities is different. The urban agglomeration in the Yangtze River Delta belongs to multi center agglomeration;Beijing Tianjin Hebei Urban Agglomeration belongs to sub center agglomeration. The Pearl River Delta Urban Agglomeration and Chengdu Chongqing urban agglomeration need further population polycentrization, and the polycentrization direction of the two urban agglomerations is also different. The Pearl River Delta urban agglomeration evolves to a higher-level urban network system. In the process of evolution,it even gradually decentralized to achieve the trend of integrated development(which is why the trend of Guangzhou Foshan co urbanization is very obvious); The decentralization of Chengdu Chongqing urban agglomeration is because the agglomeration degree of Chengdu and Chongqing is too strong, resulting in a large-scale "agglomeration shadow" due to the siphon effect. The of Chengdu Chongqing urban agglomeration is more like reducing the status of central cities and cultivating new central cities. The urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and the urban agglomeration in the Central Plains also have a greater degree of economic agglomeration than population agglomeration, resulting in spatial mismatch. It is necessary to match the economic level of the core cities with the number of population.Only by reasonably guiding population agglomeration can we promote the coordinated development of the regional economy of the two urban agglomerations. It is precisely because of the heterogeneity of the impact of population multicenter on the coordinated development of regional economy, and the coefficient value of overall regression is too small, which shows that the impact of population multicenter on the coordinated development of regional economy has different conclusions due to the actual situation of specific urban agglomerations, which should be analyzed according to local conditions.(3)Finally,this paper also analyzes the intermediary effect of the multi center spatial structure on the impact path of promoting the coordinated development of regional economy from the micro, meso and macro levels, makes it clear that the multi center spatial structure affects the regional economic coordination through the three aspects of division of labor mechanism, sharing mechanism and government intervention mechanism, and further identifies the causal relationship between the two.The results show that economic multi center can effectively promote the functional division of labor of urban agglomeration, and the functional division of labor can narrow the urban gap and promote the coordinated development of regional economy, and the indirect effect through this path is more obvious than the direct effect. The impact of multi population centers on the coordinated development of regional economy through functional division of work is obviously heterogeneous. For some urban agglomerations, population needs agglomeration to promote functional division of labor, while for some urban agglomerations, population needs dispersion to promote functional division of labor. The reasons behind this are also different due to the actual situation of different urban agglomerations.Secondly, economic multi centers can effectively promote the coordinated development of regional economy through the path of scale borrowing and function borrowing, and the role of function borrowing is more obvious. The influence of population diversity is still abnormal due to urban agglomeration. The impact of government intervention is similar. The marginal contributions of this paper are as follows:(1)investigate the formation mechanism of its polycentric spatial structure and its impact on the coordinated development of regional economy from the level of urban agglomeration.(2)It enriches the relevant theoretical research. From the micro, meso and macro levels, this paper clarifies the mechanism behind the impact of multi center spatial structure on the coordinated development of regional economy. The three mechanisms are: Division of labor mechanism, sharing mechanism and government intervention mechanism.(3)The connotation of coordinated development of regional economy is determined from the level of urban agglomeration. The coordinated development of regional economy of urban agglomeration is divided into two levels. One level is the coordinated economic development of cities within a single urban agglomeration, and the other level is the coordinated development of multi center spatial structure to the economy of the whole urban agglomeration.
