Creativity is important for organization’s competitive advantage,and how to enhance creativity in organizations has become a key concern in both theoretical and practical circles.Numerous researches have contributed to creativity literature,while subsequent studies have shown that creativity can be divided into radical creativity and incremental creativity,and in view of the differences between these two types of creativity,it is necessary to classify and study creativity.With the widespread use of teams as a way of working in modern organizations,and competition as an effective means of stimulating creativity,it is important to explore how competition among teams affects radical creativity and incremental creativity in teams.Therefore,this study will investigate the mediating mechanism and boundary conditions of intergroup competition on team radical creativity and incremental creativity.Through theoretical construction,this study explores the effect of intergroup competition on team radical creativity and incremental creativity,its internal mechanisms,and boundary conditions.First,based on social interdependence theory,this study concludes that intergroup competition will enhance team goal commitment,which in turn affects team radical creativity and incremental creativity.Second,teambased performance appraisal and status conferral criteria will promote the effects of intergroup competition on team goal commitment.Finally,this study suggests that team goal orientation will moderate the effect of team goal commitment on team radical creativity and incremental creativity.In order to verify the theoretical hypotheses,this study conducted three empirical studies based on survey,and used SPSS and Mplus software to conduct a series of statistical analyses.In study 1,a total of 85 team leaders’ questionnaires and 404 team members’ questionnaires were collected through a two-wave survey,and the results found that intergroup competition positively influenced radical creativity and incremental creativity;Study 2 collected 91 team leaders’ questionnaires and 432 team members’ questionnaires through a two-wave survey,and found that intergroup competition positively influenced team goal commitment;team goal commitment positively influenced team radical creativity and incremental creativity;intergroup competition would indirectly affect team radical creativity and incremental creativity via team goal commitment,with a stronger indirect effect on team incremental creativity.Study 3 collected 99 team leaders’ questionnaires and 466 team members’ questionnaires through a three-wave survey,and found that intergroup competition was positively related to team radical creativity and incremental creativity,and intergroup competition would indirectly affect team radical creativity and incremental creativity via team goal commitment,with a stronger indirect effect on team incremental creativity;team-based performance appraisal and status conferral criteria positively moderate the relationship between intergroup competition and team radical creativity and incremental creativity;team learning goal orientation positively moderated the relationship between team goal commitment and team radical creativity;team performance approach goal orientation positively moderated the relationship between team goal commitment and team incremental creativity;team performance avoidance goal orientation negatively moderated the relationship between team goal commitment and team radical creativity and incremental creativity.By exploring the relationship between intergroup competition and team radical creativity and incremental creativity,the mechanisms and theoretical boundaries,this study enriches the literature on the antecedents of radical creativity and incremental creativity,provides a different research perspective on the classification of creativity,and enriches theoretical research on the relationship between competition and creativity.Finally,this study explores management practice and analyzes research gaps and future research perspectives.
