Seismic impedance inversion is a special seismic process and interpretation technique which uses impedance, the product of rock density and P-wave velocity; Seismic impedance inversion throve from the 70s of 20 century, and change conventional seismic data into lithology data, which provide important information for oil-gas prospecting. This paper introduces the development and the basic theory of seismic inversion. Author introduces several impedance seismic inversion methods, and elaborately introduces their advantage and disadvantage and their applicability. The key techniques of seismic inversion have been concluded. In the case study part, the applicability of several seismic impedance inversion methods has been compared. Example shows how to apply seismic inversion properly in the complicated structured reservoir. According to the drilling and geology information, inversion impedance data has been applied to reservoir prediction. The main understanding and achievement of the paper are as follows:(1) Seismic inversion integrates seismic interpretation, seismic inversion and geology understanding. So seismic and geology information are indispensably(2) Seismic data should be re-sampled. Well logging data must be edited and correlated.(3) Seismic inversion methods have their own advantage and disadvantage and applicability. We should decide which inversion method is suitable.(4) Seismic data should be inverted again and again, until attain the best result. The QC of the inversion result is very important.(5) Impedance data has been applied to an exploration zone in Shengli oil field to study the lithology and structural attitude. In Moxi gas field, impedance data has been applied to predict the distribution of gas reservoir.
