As the rapid development of Chinese transport system, GIS technology and satellite positioning technology are widely used in the intelligent transportation system. As an important component of ITS, vehicle navigation system plays an important part in improving the road capacity and improve traffic conditions. The key of vehicle navigation system is how to ensure the accuracy of vehicle location. Maptmatching as software technology, which can improve the positioning accuracy without increasing too much cost in equipments, is widely used in navigation systems.The paper is concentrated on data processing and map matching in vehicle navigation system. First of all, navigation system and the position of data processing as well as map matching in it are briefly outlined. Then this paper is divided into two parts, data processing and map matching, and they are analyzed deeply.Data processing includes the application of protocol in GPS receiver module, designed protocol resolution algorithm, data coordinate transformation from the WGS-84 coordinates to Beijing 54 coordinates with combination of principle of coordinate transformation, reasons and solutions of data drift, interruption and the jump. Experimental data is analyzed in the contents of every section. Effects of data pre-processing are given combined with maps. Experimental results show the following facts that the methods of data processing in this paper are correct; the results of data processing are in line with the actual road conditions and they can be used as source of data for map matching the next step.As to the map matching part, the basic principles of map matching and its algorithm are introduced by classification. Factors that can affect the features of real time, robustness and accuracy in map matching are analyzed. A comprehensive map matching algorithm is designed based on the deep analysis and comparison of several commonly used map matching algorithm. Error region determination and optimal map matching road determination is designed according to the flow of algorithm. Then how to get the process of algorithm implementation of best-matching road is described. Every process of algorithm in the comprehensive flow is described in detail and flow chart of its implementation is given. Finally, Map matching algorithm is verified combined with experiments. In the experiment, GPS receiver module in the GPS navigator is used to receive data. Map matching is carried out on more complex sections, and experimental results in general sections and non-specific sections are described indetail. The results show that the synthetic map matching algorithm has a high accuracyeven in complex sections. It also has a good adaptability and is able to meet therequirements of map matching.
