In the grinding process, the grinding energy almost entirely converted to thermal energy. Most of the heat generated in the grinding area leads to a sharp rise of the temperature of grinding area. It will reduce the workpiece surface quality and grinding wheel life if the heat accumulating in the grinding area cannot be released in time.Heat pipe works through working fluid's phase transition. It can transport heat for a long distance without external power supply. It is called "heat superconductor" and has been widely used in energy field, electronics field, aviation field, medical field and so on.In this paper, according to the operation principle of rotating heat pipes, structural design and heat transfer analysis of heat pipe wheel were done, in order to use the excellent ability of the heat pipe to export the heat out of the grinding zone in time and control the area temperature effectively. The main research work and achievements are as follows:(1) Based on deep analysis of operation principle and characteristics of rotating heat pipes, the heat pipe grinding wheel was designed, including the choice of working fluid and wall materials, estimation of fluid volume, the analysis of thermal resistance and design of the cooling part.(2) The design requirements of the wheel matrix was proposed, the structure analysis finite element model of heat pipe wheel was established, and the structure strength was checked through the stress analysis.(3) The temperature field of heat pipe wheel in surface grinding was calculated by FEM. The influence of the heat pipe wall thickness, the rotation speed of the wheel and heat flux on the temperature field was analyzed, providing the basis for the design and production of the heat pipe wheel.
