In this thesis the algorithms of optimal layout for blanking part mostly in use were analyzed and compared. Algorithm to apex of polygon in layout was further studied based on the old one. By calculating distances of polygons, punch-step-length can be available, thus a new optimal layout algorithm was built. This algorithm can solve the problem of single part layout both on strip and plate, which is efficient, practical and can ensure optimal results. Furthermore, OLCAD (Comi5uter Aided Design of Optimal Layout for Punching Mold) system was developed based on CAXA Electronic Board 2000 by using the algorithm. The OLCAD system was designed and developed on Electronic Board Application Develop System by using Visual C++5.0. The system can be integrated with CAXA Electronic Board 2000 seamlessly, and has the features of friendly interface, operating easily, high layout speed, efficient algorithm and good practicality. The main function of the system are: First, Automatic margins inquiring was realized by using programs to treat with datum, which is very convenient to user. Meanwhile, margins can be modified freely. Second, the system can calculate the optimal results of single row, pair-wise single row, double row and pair-wise double row at the same time, which can satisfy every punching technology. Third, the system can calculate the optimal results and give the optimal layout drawings of single part layout on plate, which can solve the optimal layout problems of numerical controlled punching.
