The coordination compounds, synthesized with transition metal and polypyridines as raw materials, are more and more important as their various structures and extensive uses. The use foreground of these compounds will be extensive in the field of molecular discernment, molecular catalysis, self-assemble, anti-tumour medicine and nucleic acid probe etc. In this paper, three polypyridine ligands and their transition metal compounds have been synthesized. They are:[Mn(dafo)Cl2] · 1/2H2O 1, H[CoCl4] ·2(dafo)·2H2O 2, [Ni(dafo)Cl2] · 1/2CH3CH2OH 3, [Cu(dafo)2Cl2] · 2H2O 4, [Cu(dafo)2Br2] 5, [Cu(dafo)2(H2O)2](NO3)2 6,[Cu3(dafo)2(CH3COO)6]n 7, [Mn L2Cl2]n 8, [Co L2Cl4 (H2O)4] · CH3CH2OH 9, [Ni2 L2Cl4 (H2O)4] ·CH3CH2OH 10, [Cu L2Cl2]n 11, [Cu L2Br2]n ·2nH2O 12, [Cu L2 (H2O)2]n (NO3)2n ·nCHCl3 13, [Cu L2(Ac)4] · H2O 14, [Mn L32Cl2] · 2H2O 15, [Co L3Cl2] 16, [Ni L32Cl2] ·2H2O 17, [Cu L3Cl2] 18, [Cu L32Br2] · CHCl3· H2O 19, [Cu L32 (H2O)2] (NO3)2·CHCl3 20。These complexes are all determined by elemental analysis, infrared spectrum, UV spectrum, and fluorescence spectrum. The properties of these compounds are forecasted by experiment facts.The crystal structures of the complexes 2, 4, 6, 7 have been determined. The variety coordination modes of the ligand dafo with transition metal are found. In compound 2, the dafo and H[CoCl4] are combined with intermolecular force,and an enormous molecule is formed. The dafo is a bidentate ligand in compound 4 and 6, the central ion is in six coordination environment. The compound 7 is one-dimensional chain configuration, the ligand dafo is a monodentate ligand, and acetoxy is a bridged ligand. Magnetism of the compound 7 has been studied, and the result indicates that the compound is a paramagnetic one. The synthesis reaction mechanism of the compound 7 has also been discussed.
