As a kind of Artificial Intelligence, neural network has been widely used in many scientific fields. In underground Engineering, it is useful to the development of Rock Mechanics because of its neural networks' non-linearity and identification ability.With mining tunnel as the studied object, the stability of surrounding rock and its supporting design are studied in the paper. At first, the author has analyzed the destroy style and mechanism of mining tunnel, studied various factors which influence on the stability and supporting design of mining tunnel of metallic underground mines. The main factors have been determined to be the depth and width of mining tunnel, the strength of surrounding rock, the complete degree of mass rock and the condition of underground water.Then, the author has analyzed mechanics principle, influencing factor on shotcrete and bolt support, new technology of shotcrete and bolt support and the principles of designing and construction of shotcrete and bolt support, and studied BP neural networks' work principle, structure and defectiveness. A model of modified BP neural networks has been built in order to identify the supporting design of mining tunnel.At last, a Intelligent System of mining tunnel supporting design has been established in program language of MATLAB 6.1. The system mentioned above makes the automation of mining tunnel supporting design available. And it has been proved by practice.
