The ICAD system of hammer forging dies for connecting rods has been developed based on KBE and uptodate 3D engineering software. Embodying mighty 3D featuring functions etc, it can do intellillgent work like an expert, including reasoning, learning and so on. So it effectively combines CAD software and artificial intelligent technology. Depending on experience greatly, die design needs to deal with complicated graphics and mass data, the traditional CAD system can not meet the production needs while the ICAD system is the best answer to actuallize die design automation. So it is significative to study the ICAD system of hammer forging dies for connection rods.From practical design and production, the paper has made relatively deep probe and study on ICAD system, and also has put forward primary resolvents. In addition, we have designed and partly implemented a practical system satisfying enterprises' needs based on actual things and existing technology with VB6, ACCESS97, SolidWorks2001.The design of the system has strictly followed the idea and method of software engineering. In terms of the actual needs, the total system is divided into eight modules: input of parts' information, cold forging desgin, heat forging design, performing design, die design, processes card design and information base with manangement system. The knowledge base with attched system has been founded as well. Timely testing has been made in the course of design and after the design. The testing indicates that the system runs smoothly and reliable, and meets the demand. It could satisfy the basic demand of enterprises only if further developed.The paper is a beneficial seek in improving the practicality of ICAD application to die design. It has practical worth and a bright future.
