Along with the continuously development of the computer technology , the usage of computer in every walk of life is becoming more and more popular. To catch up with the march of the information era , traditional key industries are joining the tide of information technology, and as a result there comes the Computer Aid Design or CAD technique. Roll groove design of the pilger pipe mill plays a critical role in operation thereof. With an alterable cross-section, the said groove needs to be designed in a rather complex way, involving a great number of design parameters. Bound with limitation of relevant experience, theory and computation, etc., it is hard to get proper and reliable roll groove with the conventional design way. Thanks to the development of the computer technology, engineers can take the advantages of the CAD technique and combine the theory with the experiences to materialize optimum roll groove design and get the design method standardized and more logic, thus further enhance consistency of the roll groove which in turn, improves the product quality and yield of the pipe mill, saves the technological engineers from heavy work load of calculation, and develops the design of pilger pipe mill roll groove to a higher level. The article details the CAD function and the overall development of the CAD system. Also described here in the article are in-deep research and discussion on the pilger mill roll groove that is deemed as rather special and complicated. A math model for optimization of pilger mill roll groove is set up based on various factors concerning the roll groove including the deformation theory, design process and selection of the parameters, etc., and Visual Basic (VB) is used as a developing tool for the CAD. As a result, a CAD software for the roll groove optimization is developed that provides such functions as groove data management, groove profile plotting and groove data printing, being a basis for relevant technological decision and groove optimization. In the process of design, the concept of the software engineering is introduced into the roll groove CAD system, and relevant program software is successfully developed in line with the design process for structuralized program.Furthermore, the designer's experience can be introduced into the designing course and the designing result can be modified at any time, because of the graphical user interface. This software is an all-purpose one, being capable of running in Windows95operating system. The said CAD system also provides such advantages as quick designing, high accuracy and easy maintenance, providing a scientific method in the pass design of pilgar rollThe roll groove optimization and the said soft ware development described here in the article lays a foundation for future Computer Aided Manufacture or CAM ) of roll machining. This research project features combining relevant manufacturing process with modern CAD technology to materialize the optimization of the roll groove design.
