Steel angle is a general purpose pass, used in all kinds of steel structure, therefore its use scope is extremely widespread, and holds a greater proportion in the steel products production. As an important step, the roll groove design——the selection of the roll groove system and the determination of the dimension, makes the decisive effect on the dimensional accuracy and the mechanic character of the tread steel bar.This article discussed the development and the basic design methods of the"Computer Aided Roll Pass Design", researched and analyzed the CARD technology systematically. This research job analyzed the extending roll pass system,the butterfly roll pass system and the ultimate roll groove. The mathematical models and experience formulations used for roll pass design are corrected according to the basic theory and the practical experience of the engineer. The steel angle CARD was set up with the visual program tool-VisualBasic6.0, based on the method of the structural program design. This system has the friendly windows for dialogue between person and machine, can draw and label the plan of each roll groove with the way of parameterization drawing, under the condition that giving the size of the rough blank,the specifications of the finished product and the technical parameters of the roll, selecting the minimum consumption as the target function, adopting the optimization,adopting the boundary condition of the grip,the strength of roll and the check of the power-generating. Moreover, the plan can be outputted in the software of AutoCAD. In addition, the design result can be outputted in the format of text, referred by the engineer.This paper based on the theory and the practice. The mathematical models established was suitable with the practical procedure,so the steel angle CARD system will have the better practicability. Designing with this CARD system can shorten the design cycle of the new product, reduce the consumptions of the mills and the production cost, and heighten the dimensional accuracy and the mechanical character of the finished steel angle. It has the important significance for increasing the economic benefit of the enterprise.
