The spontaneous combustion of coal seam is one of the major problems in safe production of coal mine. It is the precondition of coal seam fire prediction and disposal to master coal self-ignition mechanism and study coal spontaneous combustion characteristic parameters both qualitatively and quantitatively. Therefore, the problem was studied and investigated to some extent in the paper. On the basis of referring the foreign and domestic literatures and systematically generalizing the former research results, characteristic parameters of coal spontaneous combustion were researched to a certain extent by the methods of theoretical analysis, experiment simulation and field application. The heat accumulation and emission model of coal was built up by analyzing heat increase process and integrating thermodynamics and heat-transfer theory. Then, major effect factors were analyzed and the definition of characteristic parameters of coal spontaneous combustion were presented. Experimental research investigates three sides: conductivity efficient was determined and the law of heat conduction coefficient with temperature, particle size and porosity was measured; Characteristic parameters of coal spontaneous combustion were qualitatively studied and quantitatively determined by coal spontaneous combustion experiment; Major effect factors of coal spontaneous combustion were studied by programmed heat test. On the basis of characteristic parameters of coal spontaneous combustion, the dangerous region determining theory of coal self-ignition was put forward. The determining theory was successfully applied to the face of No. 2338 of ChaiLi mine and the face of No. 26031 face of MiCun mine.
