Objective: The development of microwave technology brings us most facilities, improvement of our lives, changes of our life styles, etc. At the same time, microwaves have also brought us some serious hazards on health, so it had been taken as one of main pollutant in public environment. Microwave irradiation, especially at high-density, can produce various detrimental changes based on the heat action, while many researches showed that low-density microwaves can also produce detrimental changes on healthy organisms after repeated irradiation although no rise of body temperature. Many studies about the effects of high-density microwaves irradiation on immune function were carried out, but few studies about the effects of low-density microwaves radiation on immune function were reported. At present, there is not a coincidence about the effects of microwaves on immune function. The present paper was carried out to study the effects of microwaves on immune functions in mice exposed to different power density irradiation and different duration irradiation, to understand the role of microwave radiation on immune function, to make a comprehensive evaluation on the effects of microwave on immune function, and to provide some scientific basis for the protection of peoples' health and utilization of microwaves reasonable. Methods: Experiment one: Kunming mice were exposed to 2450MHz continuous microwave irradiation at density of 0mW/cm2, 1mW/cm2, 5mW/cm2, 15mW/cm2 to study the effects of microwave sub-chronic irradiation on the immune function in mice. 16 mice in every treatment group were irradiated 1 hour for 30 days. Experiment two: Kunming mice were exposed to 2450MHz continuous microwave irradiation at density of 5mW/cm2 to study the effects of different duration irradiation of low-power-level on the immune function in mice. The mice in every treatment group were irradiated 1 hour for 3,9,15,21days, respectively. The false irradiation treatment was carried out as negative control for corresponding irradiated group. Mice were decapitated at 3rd, 9th, 15th, 21st days to determine the following parameters: the body weight of mouse, the thymus weight and thymus index, the spleen weight and spleen index, the content of immunoglobulin G (IgG) in serum, ANAE positive rate in lymphocyte of peripheral blood, the peritoneal macrophage phagocytic capacity (phagocytosis index and phagocytosis rate). Statistical analysis was performed by t-test, ANOVA with SPSS10.0. Results: 1. Effects of microwaves radiation on immune function in mice exposed to different power-density irradiation. The contents of IgG in serum in 1mW/cm2 and5mW/cm2 treatment groups were significant higher than that of control(P<0.01), but lower than that of control in 15mW/cm2 treatment group(P<0.01). There were significant differences of IgG among different treatment group. The results above suggested that microwaves irradiation at reasonable density could stimulate the production of IgG in serum. But the production of IgG in serum could be inhibited with the increase of power density. The ANAE positive rates of lymphocytes from peripheral blood in every treatment group were decreased significantly compared with control(P < 0.01),and there was a good density-effect relationship. These results showed that microwaves irradiation could decrease the quantity of T lymphocytes in peripheral blood. A significant enhancement of peritoneal macrophage phagocytic capacity (of phagocytosis index and phagocytosis rate) was observed in mice irradiated at 1mW/cm2 (P < 0.05), but no at 5mW/cm2 and 15mW/cm2 compared with false-irradiated group. The body weights of mice were decreased in all irradiation group, and there were significant difference between 5, 15mW/cm2 groups and control(P<0.05). The weight of thymus increased in 1mW/cm2 group and decreased in 5 and 15mW/cm2 group, but no significant difference was observed compared with control(P>0.05). Thymus index tended to increase in all microwave groups, but no differen...
