The suspended particulates in the air can do great harm to the human body directly. As one of the most important coal industry base of China, Taiyuan city has very serious air pollution problems, whereas' the monitor data of pollutants are deficient. With new portable instruments, measurementson the concentration of inhalable particulates and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were carried out and analyses were made in this paper. The experiment was divided into 6 parts: study on indoor and outdoor pollutants, monitor and analyses on 15 evenly divided grids in the constructed area of Taiyuan, etc..Analyses of the data showed that: the daily average concentrations of the pollutants exceeded the national standard; the morning average concentration was obviously higher than the afternoon average; smoking or other human activities can cause an instant increase of the indoor concentration; the spatial distribution of the pollutants in the city looked even, the highest pollution was found in the northeast area while lowest in the southeast; the rank of concentrations at different function areas was: Power/Chemical industrial area > Industrial area > Commercial area > Residential area. The main source of the pollutants in: the- air of Liuxiang was the smoke emitted from restaurants. While the pollutants in the air of Yingze Street mainly came from the exhaust gases of automobiles. Meanwhile, the causes ef the. pollutants distribution formation were analyzed and some suggestions were proposed to improve the air quality.
