The suspended particulates in air may do great harm to the human body directly. As one of the important coal industry bases of China, Shanxi province faces very serious air pollution problems, whereas the monitored data of such pollutants are deficient. With new portable instruments, a series of measurements on the concentration of inhalable particulates and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were carried out and the consequent analyses were fulfilled in this paper.Analyses of the measured data for monitoring on clean and polluted districts in three cities showed that the average concentration of PM10 and PAHs in heating season was higher than in non- heating season and the south was higher than the north. The contribution rate of PM10 and PAHs for different cities was not completely the same, because of polluted source, weather, landform and city economy. In terms of mass concentration of theparticulate pollutants, according to the order from bigness to smallness, the rank was Linfen, Datong and Taiyuan.Measured results for household energy and indoor particulate pollution showed that the indoor particulate pollution in the village-in-town of Xiao Wang was very serious in all three households. The data measured for burning raw coal, briquette and LPG were higher than Taiyuan city's data and they higher than the national standard 2nd class. In terms of mass emission concentration of the particulate pollutants, according to the order from bigness to smallness, the rank was coal, briquette, LPG.This paper monitored Xinggao coke-making plant in Gaoping city. The results showed that the particles emitted from coke making process of this clean coke oven were very low; the average PMi0 concentrations were much lower than the first class of national standard for machinery coke oven. PAHs and AS values were all very low; and the particulate pollution level was much lower than other types of coke ovens.Meanwhile, the causes of the pollutants distribution formation were analyzed and some suggestions were proposed to improve the air quality. The pollution of environment was still more serious in Shanxi, because of special geography condition; unreasonable distribution of industry; the superduty industry structure and the fuel structure. Suggestions adjust distribution of industry; close and move pollute the business enterprise;accelerate the traditional industry excellent to turn the upgrade; adjust the fuel structure; expand to use the clean burning technique; control the discharge of auto exhaust etc.
