In this paper, photoelastic coating method and strain-gauging method were used conjointly to study the stress distribution of the column of cross wedge rolling machine. The result of study deepened the understanding of this complicated problem and there is certain reference value on improving the stress distribution of the column.The photoelastic coating method used to carry out experimental research of stress distribution is the relatively suitable method in experimental mechanics at present. But it is necessary to improve the measurement accuracy and the degree of automation. For this reason, based on the present repaid measuring technique and the peculiarity of photoelastic coating fringe pattern,the author of this paper has programmed a image processing program and has improved the accuracy of imformation processing.For this reason, the author used mid-value filtering method for diminishing the pattern noise, the binary-image transformation method by selecting variable threshold value, and the extraction method of the central line for full-field binary-image.____________________________________________________Abstract____________________________________________________The research results of this paper indicate that the auto processing system of photoelastic coating fringe by recommanding modern digital image processing technology, calculating technology into photoelastic coating method, has synthesized the peculiarrity of several subject. Not only it has met the requirement of the strength analysis of column of the cross wedge rolling machine, but also provided very satisfied means for the development and strength detection on forging and stamping equipment.
