Respectively using barium hydroxide and a basic anion exchanger as a catalyst, 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl) butyraldehyde is prepared from the Aldol condensation of butyraldehyde with formaldehyde. The usage of the solid catalysts has not only increased the reaction selectivity, but also lowered the ash content of final product. As a result, the production flow will be simplified, and with a high catalyst regeneration efficiency, the production cost decreased. After distillating an aqueous layer out from the reaction mixture, 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl) butyraldehyde is, in order to obtain 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)butyric acid, oxidized further by hydrogen Peroxide. Furthermore, taking oxygen and air as an oxidant respectively, the oxidation was, with a unsatisfactory yield, carried out under a heterogeneous catalysis. For analyzing the chemical composition of reaction mixtures, GC method for the Aldol condensation and HPLC method for the oxidation were set up and applied respectively. Besides, the purity and some physico-chemical parameters were determined by chemical analysis.
