St-PAM is a kind of new copolymer with the capability of PAM and Starch. It has lots of uses and has been widely used in many industry fields such as oil exploration, fluent treatment, paper production industry and medical treatment industry. The graft copolymer was synthesized with the basic material of soluble starch and acrylamide initiated by (NH4)2S2Og/NaHSO3 in this paper. The optimal condition: mass ratio of starch and acrylamide 1:2,initiator quality 0.3g,reation temperature 50℃ and reaction time 3h was obtained through orthogonal experiments with the target of efficiency of graft, soluble capability and molecular weight of the grafting chain. The influence of individual factors was analyzed in detail with the three targets. The synthesized copolymer was used to treat effluent with the effluent of Xialu Eastern Steelwork and Wuhan Steelwork. Efficiency of the wiping off suspension and COD showed that the synthesized copolymers had a superior capability than other PAMs.The differences between the synthesized copolymer and other PAMs in structures were distinctly showed through the analysis of FTIR, SEM and DTG and explained the different effect of effluent treatment.
