Starch graft polyacrylamide is a kind of new copolymer with the capability of PAM and Starch.It has Starch and Polyacrylamide characteristics. This not only raises the use-value of the starch, but also extendes applied rang of Starch, and also improved the performance of synthetic polymer. And the cheap starch replaces the expensive polymer, reducing production cost, increasing an economic performance. It has lots of usages and has been widely used in many industry fields such as oil exploration, fluent treatment, paper production industry and medical treatment industry.The graft copolymer was synthesized with the basic material of corn starch and acrylamide initiated by (NH4)2S2O8 in this paper. Firstly, reaction conditions of graft polymerization such as concentration of initiator, reaction temperature, concentration of monomer, reaction time gelatinized temperature,the ways of joining monomer and initiator were investigated. Secondly, the optimal conditions were obtained through orthogonal experiments with the target of conversion, graft content and grafting efficiency. Finally, the synthesized copolymer was used in Paper-making Wastewater treatment and Paper-making. The following were the results.Gelatinization is good for grafting. Graft content was greater. As concentration of monomer, concentration of initiator, reaction time and reaction temperature increased, Conversion, graft content and grafting efficiency first increased and then decreased. Monomer and initiator were joined in by twice were better than those joined in by once.Orthogonal experiments'results were showed. The optimal conditions of high graft content were that reaction time is 4h, concentration of monomer is 1.06mol/L, reaction temperature is 60℃, concentration of initiator is 4.38mmol/L. The optimal conditions of high grafting efficiency were that reaction time is 3h, concentration of monomer is 0.49mol/L, reaction temperature is 60℃, concentration of initiator is 8.76mmol/L. The optimal conditions of high conversion were that reaction time is 3h, concentration of monomer is 1.06mol/L, reaction temperature is 60℃, concentration of initiator is 4.38mmol/L.Through the analysis of FTIR, it showed the Starch was grafted acrylamide; Through the analysis of TG, it showed Starch graft polyacrylamide was more stable than polyacrylamide; Through the analysis of SEM, it showed Starch graft polyacrylamide was grafted on the superficial of starch.When the synthesized copolymer was used to treat wastewater, the synthesized copolymer had a superior capability than polyacrylamide. The influence of flocculation by the mixture of Starch graft polyacrylamide and Al2(SO4)3 was investigated. The results showed that the flocculation of the mixture were more superior than Starch graft polyacrylamide's and polyacrylamide's.The synthesized copolymer could be used as retention aid, and it had a superior capability than polyacrylamide. As the mass of synthesized copolymer increased, the paper weight increased, the tear and folding strength decreased, Tensile strength and breaking length first increased and then decreased.
