This thesis consists of two parts: the first part are reviews that summarize the phyto-chemical constituents and pharmacological research of Origanum family. On the basis of this review, the phytochemical constituents and pharmacological research of Origanum vulgare L.was emphatically summarized. In the second part, we carried systematically out phytochemical research on the whole plants of fresh O. vulgare L. originated from Pingjiang region of HuNan Province. Firstly, the volatile oil was extrat-ed from O. vulgare by petroleum ether extraction and steam distillation, respectively, and the chemical constituents of the volatile oil were identified by GC-MS method, then the relative percentage of the components were determined by normalization method of area, and the diffrence of the chemical constituent of the volatile oil using two distinct extractions was contrasted. Antimicrobial activity of the volatile oil was preliminarily tested. The results showed that the main components of the volatile oil were carvacrol, thymol, p-cymene, o-buthyl phthalate and methyl thymyiether, which belonging to the categories of monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, aliphatic acid and ester, alcohols, aldehydes, phenols and ketones and so on. The volatile oil had effective inhibitory activities against enteritis-causing bacteria. Secondly, ten chemical constituens were isolated from the trichloromethane extracted part of ethanol extract of O. vulgare, nine of them were identified by means of UV, IR, MS, !H-NMR, 13C-NMR and DEPT, and one new compounds named as baihuayinchenine II was isolated from this genius for the first time. At the same time, ten chemical constituents were isolated from the ethyl acetate extracted part of ethanol extract of O. vulgare, including flavones, coumarins and triterpenes. Among them, baihuayinchenine IV and V were two new compounds, which have no been reported previously in the literature. In all, this thesis can help us systematically understand the chemical constituents of O. vulgare and seek active constituents for inhibiting bacterium, also provide the scientific foundations for medical experiment and exploitation and utilization of the plant.
