Tantalum, a kind of rare metal with high melting point, has the advantage of high strength, good plasticity, high corrosion resistance and unipolar conduction of electricity, and is usually used to produce high-quality capacitor in the form of power or wire. Generally tantalum wire can be obtained by rolling, rotating forging and drawing, but rotating forging has the shortage of low production efficiency and high labour intensity, and is apt to present various kinds of defects. Therefore, this subject adopts rolling to replace the traditional rotating forging to improve the production efficiency and reduce worker's labour intensity. For this purpose, this article proposes a six maos-six maos-oval-round pass system for tantalum wire rolling based on the theory of rolling deformation. And then a three-dimensional elastic-plastic finite element method (FEM) for large deformation is adopted to simulate the rolling processes, according to the simulation results, the influence of some main technological parameters on rolling processes are also studied. According to these results, some revision and optimization are made to the designed pass system. To investigate the feasibility of the pass system developed, a set of experimental rolling device is designed and manufactured to conduct practical rolling examination for the revised and optimized pass system. The results indicates that the pass system and the experimental rolling device developed are feasible which can roll the φ5mm workpiece to φ2mm one successfully. To apply the pass system developed to production as soon as possible, a set of leading and defending device with enough free degrees is designed and manufactured according to the actual product condition. Without changing original rolling mill, this device can guide the tantalum wire traveling trough the pass system smoothly by making some adjustments only to the leading and defending device. Rolling tests in actual production indicate that this leading and defending device and the pass system developed can basically meet the need of actual production.
