Generally, the 2D engineering drawings are required to be generated for the design of dies & molds, which are regarded as the main bases of the process actualizing and detecting. It often takes much more time for the designers to deal with the engineering drawings than to design the structure in the CAD system for progressive dies. So an important embodiment of a CAD system is how to generate the 2D drawings efficiently and effectively. In this paper, these problems are considerably investigated to achieve that objective. The whole structure and the functions of the useful CAD system for progressive dies are introduced, and several modules of the generation of the drawings are explained, which include the automatic coordinate dimensioning, the automatic creation of the title column, the creation of subsidiary table and so on. In the context, the algorithm of the automatic coordinate dimensioning of the engineering drawings is stated, which includes the automatic getting sets of points, the locating of dimension lines and the way of preventing the dimension lines from interfering. At the same time, how to realize the automatic form of the title column and the function of the real-time modification is expounded by means of the technology of the block definition and the block reference. The study method of the automatic generation of the subsidiary table by using the managing of the data in the entities, and some common assistant modules are mentioned. The drawings can be conveniently exported by using the developed system software according to the above-mentioned methods, which makes the CAD system for progressive dies more practicable and more efficiently.
