In conventional mirror surface finishing, polishing with loose abrasive particles has been widely applied. In particular, MFAP (Magnetic Field Assisted Polishing) utilizing MF (Magnetic Fluid) or MRF (Magnetorheological Fluid) as the abrasive media has ever played an important role because the behaviour of the abrasive within MF or MRF can be controlled by applying magnetic field This paper presents a new MPT (Magnetic Compound Fluid Polishing Tool) produced by mixing sub-micron or micron order abrasive particles into a magnetic compound fluid (MCF) and its fundamental performance in surface finishing. MCF is an intelligent fluid, which is developed by mixing a magnetic fluid (MF) and a Magneto-rheological fluid (MRF) and α-cellulose into a solvent, and hence reacting upon magnetic fields. In the present work, twelve kinds of kerosene-based MPTs were prepared. Following the microscopic observation of the prepared MPTs with different compositions, their shear strengths and fundamental performances in constant contact force polishing were investigated experimentally. The results indicated that the composition of the new polishing tool determines its shear strength and the polishing tool having stronger shear strength shows a greater ability in metal surface finishing. At last, surface roughness pohshing ability were investigated experimentally. The results indicated that surface roughness polishing used proper MPT can attain Ra=0.017/μm.
